Deadly Hunter Killer submarine is capable of hearing a ship leaving port in New York... whilst sitting underwater in the English channel!

> One of the world's most sophisticated and powerful nuclear submarines
> Carries dozens of cruise missiles capable of hitting targets 1,200 miles away
> Her sonar can detect vessels moving on the other side of the ocean
> Powerful nuclear reactor allows her to cruise non-stop for 25 years
> HMS Ambush is so hi-tech the giant submarine doesn't even need a periscope

She costs around £1 billion to build, has sonar so sensitive it can hear other vessels 3,000 miles away and carries a giant payload of 38 deadly Tomahawk cruise missiles.

HMS Ambush, the Royal Navy's newest nuclear attack submarine, is one of the most sophisticated and powerful vessels of her type ever built. The giant Astute-class sub, is so hi-tech she doesn't even need a periscope, her crew instead using a digital camera system to see above the surface when she is submerged.

HMS Ambush, which was built by BAE Systems, is believed to be the world's most powerful nuclear
attack submarine. Her huge weapons payload includes super-accurate Tomahawk cruise missiles
and Spearfish torpedoes for fighting other vessels.

Astute-class submarines are the largest, most advanced and most powerful in the history of the Navy, boasting world-class design, weaponry and versatility.

HMS Ambush can travel over 500 miles in a day, allowing them to be deployed anywhere in the world within two weeks. The vessel is also one of the quietest sea-going vessels built, capable of sneaking along an enemy coastline to drop off special forces or tracking a boat for weeks.

Foreign forces will find it almost impossible to sneak up undetected by her incredibly powerful sonar equipment that can hear halfway around the world. Her Tomahawk missiles are capable of hitting targets up to 1,200 miles away - making her a vital weapon for Britain's armed forces.

Her listening ability is quite awesome. She has a sonar system with the processing power of 2,000 laptop computers.

Feeding the crew: The submarine's kitchen will be staffed by five chefs providing food 24-hours
a day for her officers and crew.

Royal Navy's Super Sub

Now that's what I call a real sub!! We would love to get our hands on one of those! :woot:

It is only the UK's close relationship with the US that has allowed the sub to reach this level of quietness.

BAE ran into technical difficulties and needed help from the US. No other country in the world would have got this kind of assistance.

This and the Virginia class subs are the most advanced SSNs in the world.

And the sub or the tech is not for sale to anyone at any price.:P

Israel could have too!

And we can always try to bribe them to give us one! After all, we Indians are past masters in that game!! :cheesy:

They build this and other nuclear subs at barrow in furness....a place 1.5 hour drive from my home...
Trident upgrade was rejected due to costs..
Now they build smaller subs with cruise missiles instead of larger trident carriers...

Soon scotland will be gone and they wont have sea port to dock their subs....as currently all get docked at northern scottish ports...

Never underestimate the West, Recent voting in Falklands island was in UK favor. I am getting a feeling that west intentionally slowed their economies to check mate growing east especially China.

How about Portsmouth, Devonport and Clyde Naval Bases?

Devonport Naval Base in Plymouth is the home of the Navy's assault ships, the Trafalgar-class submarines, half the frigates and the majority of the hydrographic fleet. Clyde Naval Base at Faslane is home to Britain's Vanguard-class submarines, and one of the Navy's two mine hunting squadrons.

This super sub will most likely be berthed at one of these two Naval bases if the Scottish one goes.

I have been to BAE systems Barrow in Furness Ship Building yard. We went on a field trip. Pretty awesome stuff. This sub is huge!!

The Inertial Management Unit (IMU) on board this Submarine alone cost 42 million GBP.

But this is Fleet escort and attack submarine. They are already working on the Vanguard class replacement which will serve as the SSBN.

This is the one that INDIA must have...

This technology is not for export. This programme was started entirely for Royal Navy. Hence the 1 billion GBP per boat cost.

Maybe a stripped down version can be exported.

GD’s Electric Boat Wins Contract to Design Next SSBN for U.S. and U.K. | Defense Procurement News

We expect the overall successor programme to remain within the White Paper cost envelope of £15-20 Billion at 2006/7 prices with the replacement platform(boats) costing £11-14Bn (at 2006/7 prices) . Assuming a four boat fleet, the replacement submarines will remain within the £11-14Bn estimate. This equates to £25Bn at outturn prices for the successor submarines. Since Parliamentary approval to replace our nuclear deterrent in 2007 the MOD has spent around £900M.
