Mongols were brutal yes, but the extant of their brutality has been exaggerated in modern times. They were no more brutal than most conquering empires in history. It's that since created the largest land based empire in history hence tales of their barbarity recorded all over the world from shores of Japan to eastern Europe and middle east and most western historians didn't bothered to whitewash their crimes like they did for Greek, Roman and European imperial empires.
