This is indeed not a good sign for those who hope that the US would come to their rescue at the first sign China started to develop islands in the SCS and extend influence.

I guess not that simple. Not simple for China, as well, for sure. But, China acts, relatively, from the vantage point of strength and capability, not weakness.

Playing out weakness in international relations is dangerous because those major powers, including (and primarily) the US, are ruthless.

Virtually the same hands that shook with those of Saddam also pulled the table under his feet when the rope was around his neck.

China and US will never get into a direct war over the SCS.

It's just another Cold War.

US will continue to annoy China, but that's as far as it will go. No war.

There will be many incidents that look like China and US may go to war, but eventually both will back off.

It's geopolitics. Russia and US played this game masterfully during the Cold War.

Only smaller countries get hurt in cold wars.

........RIMPAC is a big exercise, 2016 included 49 warships of the 27 participant. The exercise is led by US Navy, Royal Canadian Navy, Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force, Royal Australian Navy and Royal New Zealand Navy

Hosted by U.S. Pacific Fleet, RIMPAC 2016 will be led by U.S. Vice Adm. Nora Tyson, commander of the U.S. 3rd Fleet (C3F), who will serve as the Combined Task Force (CTF) Commander. Of course, a joint exercise does not make friend or anything; but still it demonstrates relevancy in regional and global affairs. I take more about bilateral exercises, for that matter, than ultilateral ones. The nature of the drills is also important.
