Opening a new thread here to discuss the recent uptick of insurgency activities in CHT. Most likely they have support from our neighbors and poses a threat to the development of the region and stability in Bangladesh as whole.

Posting some videos to get discussion started.

Throwing out some random but plausible theories for discussion -

1. This new group is supported by India on behalf of Quad, to keep BD in line and not get in Chinese camp. They have done it in the past as admitted by the terrorist Santu Larma in the past. So that wouldn't be surprising.

2. This group is supported by China to keep BD in line and not join the Quad camp.

3. This group funded by Burmese Junta to create instability in Bangladesh and to establish an upper hand over Bangladesh.

4. These are just independent local actors with no foreign allegiance. - This is highly unlikely given the landlocked area CHT is in.

Activities of the other rival terrorist group JSS which is headed by the terrorist Santu Larma. As recent as February of this year when a Bangladesh army soldier was killed in shootout with the terrorists.

For background on the terrorist Santu Larma, this article from NY times shows his confession that India was helping their movement in the 80s.

Hinduvta terrorism needs to be dealt with very swiftly.

GoC's challenging tone is very stupid. Terrorists or what, some of the locals are fighting guerrilla war against the army of Bangladesh. Asking them to come out open is not the way to deal with them.

Military people should find out ways how to defeat them.

It was a morale boosting speech. His soldiers clearly understand that. I don't think anyone is under the illusion that open confrontation is how such insurgency/terrorism is fought.

Buy a lot of Bayraktar TB-2 with ammo. Some for intelligence gathering and spotting, some for bombing. That will do, no need to waste soldiers' lives.

CHT Tribal civilians who just want to live a peaceful life in their own way and has nothing to do with these terrorists are going to suffer. They get so much benefit in the form of quotas in Govt jobs and admissions. Yet, these guys have to resort to these so called independence movement. They complain about Bangladesh Military Presence in CHT, and yet haven't laid down their arms and stopped committing violent activities since the treaty was signed in 1997. Their dream of independent state need to be crushed without mercy.

However, a drone may not distinguish between a terrorist with a rifle and a civilian. So, there will be civilian casualties also.

I am not sure how sophisticated those drones are. Maybe it has to be a combination of human intel and drone intel. Also I was talking about bombing the terrorists hiding in thick jungles in the hills. Never strike a village or city.
