Report: U.S., Israeli warships cross Suez Canal toward Red Sea

Egypt opposition angered at government for allowing the fleet of more than 12 ships to cross Egyptian manned waterway, Al-Quds Al-Arabi reports.

By Jack Khoury

More than twelve United States Naval warships and at least one Israeli ship crossed the Suez Canal towards the Red Sea on Friday, British Arabic Language newspaper Al-Quds Al-Arabi reported Saturday.

According to the report, thousands of Egyptian soldiers were deployed along the Suez Canal guarding the ships' passage, which included a U.S. aircraft carrier.

The Suez Canal is a strategic Egyptian waterway which connects between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.

According to eyewitnesses, the U.S. battleships were the largest to have crossed the Canal in many years, Al-Quds reported.

Egyptian opposition members have criticized the government for cooperating with the U.S. and Israeli forces and allowing the ships' passage through Egyptian territorial waters.

They said the viewed the event as Egyptian participation in an international scandal, and added that the opposition would not sit with its arms crosses while the country allowed a fleet of U.S. and Israeli military ships to cross.

Anyone have an idea of the exact ships ? I wonder if they are going to deploy close to Iran for the time being.

You are right. They look to close in.

The Israeli subs are deployed. This Carrier group is headed that way. Along with that arms shipment to Diego Garcia that had 195 Blu-110 bombs and 192 2000lb Blu-117 bombs most likely meant to arm the B-2s there.

This could all be speculation but something is going on.

USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) is the carrier leading the group.

guys think before writing

They have been deploying battleships and carriers and removing them for YEARS!!!
And an attack is done with bombers and cruise missiles not freaking battle ships lol

A carrier can inflict heavy damage along with Israeli dolphin class subs that can launch guided missiles. Iran would have nothing to counter those platforms with. Do you really think the Iranian Navy has the ability to attack a U.S. carrier ? There is a reason they are always escorted by Destroyers/Cruisers. Like i said B-2s can reach Iran at this very moment.

I think Nima is right. Movement of US battle ships is nothing too special, they are moving their carrier groups around all the time.

An attack would make no sense right now for a number of reasons:

- A new round of sanctions is just being passed by the EU and the US to induce cooperation in the nuclear question. Although they might be pointless, such a measure is not likely if an attack was imminent.
- Iran is still 2-3 years away from the bomb.
- The US and even Israel are not keen to carry out such a difficult operation with possibly dire consequences, so they will do it only as an ultimate last resort.

Sure I could be wrong, but I don't really see it guys.

It could be pressure tactics. I still don't understand why Iran just doesn't cooperate with the U.S.

Tough guy acts have been played against the U.S. before and they have resulted in very negative solutions for said tough man. What will happen when the conservatives come back into office ?
