There is not much difference between the two, every .308 wil shoot 7.62x51N but not all 7.62N will shoot a 0.308 especially reload. 7.62x51 was developed from the 0.308Win.

btw what according to you is Long range?

Some say it higher terminal velocity and has That of 7.62 x51 Nato Which has 2,733 ft/s Muzzle
Velocity

And .308 has 3,100 ft/s

Depends on your bullet weight. M80 ball is your standard 7.62x51N, next 3 are popular 0.308 loads.

I raised this question because
Israeli Galatz capable to Fire .308 Win

Can 7.62 Hit beyond 1000m M24 conducted a Kill shot at 1,250 m Max Also it has better Muzzle velocity than Russian 7.62×54mmR

There are chamber pressure issues in their interchangeability (and I've heard it go both ways, though Milspec is correct in the overall trend sometimes given 308 is generally loaded higher so you have to know what you are doing w.r.t the small diff in headspace)

I shoot 7.62 in my savage 308 no problems....but 308 ammo is just way more prevalent anyway on commercial market.

For the other way around you can do it with no issues majority of the time but best to check with the manufacturer first and also load the 308 (if you reload) a bit lower than normal after consulting with the relevant material out there.

As for their ballistic performance, they are identical and depend on the statistical quality of the round population by specific manufacturer.

Anything a 308 can do, 7.62 can do and vice versa.

Yeah that's BS.

You are not shooting 1000m with a 0.308 in combat, with the best scope in the world. I can (now after about a 1000 rounds in marlin) certainly hit 500-600 m mark every time, 800m if you are Chris Kyle Level (shot placement wise, not Jigra wise), 1000m there is no guarantee with the best shooter Carlos EFFIN Hathcock. If 0.308's could handle 1000m shots, thee would be no need for .338 lapua, 300 winmags or 6.5 creedmoors .

7.62x51N effective shootable range is about 600-800m, beyond that I doub't its repeat ability, sure it still will posses energy to kill, but in combat repeat ability is a must. i have seen .308's tumble and slice silhouettes in a paper as low as 750 yards.

What are you running for bullets? Do you use match ammo or factory? Burgher is what I run for precision shooting.

I like to try stuff, What has worked the best for me is Hornady 155 Grain A-Max, Black hills 168g hpbt, For fun plinking I do buy some zq stuff , it's fun to shoot. I don't reload.

I was big into hornady as well few years back when i switched to it from SMK (which I went with when i first got into precision shooting)....but burgher has really been helping me I find.

I got into reloading a cpl years back, before that my buddy did it for me (he was the one that really got me into shooting in the first place).....Ive never looked back on reloading since...given the customisation/cost it offers.
