Presidential polls: BJP backs P A Sangma
NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday announced its support to former Lok Sabha speaker PA Sangma for the presidential polls.

BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said that the Shiv Sena and JD(U) were not in favour of the NDA nominee for the presidential poll.

Leaders of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley announced Sangma's name at a press conference.

Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa, along with her Odisha counterpart Naveen Patnaik were the first to back Sangma for the top job, saying no tribal candidate had so far been nominated for the post.

what else they can do??? Kalam is not contesting....

If Sangama can break TMC, Mulla Mulayam and Some NDA party. It will be pain in A$$ for Sonia...

what is the use of this?

Sangma is not going to win... waste of an effort by BJP..It should concentrate more on its internal squabbles and within NDA and should bring out a consensus candidate and concentrate on winning 2014 elections so that we can be rid of this corrupt-communal Congress/UPA gov..

Sangma will become a serious candidate if Mamata and Mayawati support him. It will then make it a close fight, Shiv Sena and JDU will be forced to rethink their strategy. Even the Left parties and smaller parties of the North East may join in support of Sangma.

Supporting Sangma has less to do with Sangma himself and his presidential aspirations and more to do with expanding NDA to accomodate ADMK and BJD who are potential allies for 2014.

SS may not support Sangma but it can never ally with congress and has to remain with BJP/NDA. So the net loss of this support_sangma thingy might be JDU walking out of NDA - but then again new allies like ADMK and BJD might walk in.

Also one should not over-estimate JDU's worth - JDU needs BJP as much as [if not more than] BJP needs JDU.

PA Sangma (from Garo Hills, Meghalaya) whos niece-in-law is a friend of mine, has known to be one of the most corrupted ex-Congress leader and subsequently defected to NCP. NCP is also a part of the rulling coalition.

What a mess!!

Never back down without fighting. :) good job Patnayk, jaylalita and BJP. If all tribal voters(MP,MLA, MLC) vote for Mr.Sangma irrespective of party lines He will win handsomely.

There are many factors playing out here mate :

1. BJP cannot be seen allying with congress & UPA (same govt. which it calls the most corrupt in the history of independent India) on crucial presidential elections even if it is not going to win, if it supports candidature of Pranab it will seen as allying with the congress against whom BJP had a barrage of attacks in the past 2-3 years.

2. BJP wants to add some more allies to the NDA for the 2014 elections, support for Sangma may bring AIADMK & BJD to it's fold, even Jayalalitha met Modi some time back & had all praise for him.

3. BJP must be seen in the eyes of the voters as fighting against congress in every possible manner it can (it's all about perception).

4. Supporting Pranab, can also be seen as supporting the economic policies of UPA which BJP has always attacked on the first place.

I bet, even the BJP & any other party wants Pranab as President b'coz of his impeccable record as a politician, but politics is what stopping them from supporting him.

In the end it is a closed ballot election, i will not be surprised if many BJP members will vote for Pranab.

If the NDA can't provide support to their presidential candidate and remain divided....we can say goodbye to NDA posing any threat to Congress in the next elections.

How about Gilani,he's currently unemployed :cheesy:
