Plan to set up EPZ for copper mining in Waziristan finalised

It would be great news if it was refined and value added done in Pakistan.
Saindak mine and many other mines have been operating in Pakistan for decades. The companies operating these mines have profited in the billions. But the locals in this area and Pakistan haven’t benefited one bit. They take the raw mined product and ship it overseas for it to be refined and value added and we barely get 50% of the original raw product. Our resources are being robbed from us in broad daylight in these horrible deals. Now the thief’s in disguise will rob Waziristan of its resources.
The only way for natural resources to have a positive impact on the country is if the raw material is refined and value added in Pakistan. I wish Pakistan puts a ban on export of raw resources mined from Pakistan.

It's a good first step, but lets not just sell raw copper. Lets sell copper pipes and copper wire. It's easy to setup factories to create pipes and electrical wire made to standard sizes used abroad. Lets go one step further even and setup a company that produces these products and sells them directly to the consumers too at cheaper prices than wholesalers.

Pakistan neither have money to construct such plants and nor have adequate technical know how to run these types of plant this is the reason saindak copper mines areas were leased to chinese firm to cyarry out mining and extraction of copper from raw material/ ore similar is the case for other mining projects in Baluchistan.

They’re basically robbing our resources. We’re getting penny’s for our resources. Arabs didn’t have technical know how for oil drilling before but through a process they controlled their own oil fields and built that know how. Pakistan has given mines for decades and didn’t focus on gaining that know how.

This is daylight robbery.

The concepts you speak of still evade the thought capacity of Pakistanis. That's why characters like Ishaq Dar keep coming back. You'd have to be a bigger moron than that moron for that moron to run the show.

Ghazi sb,

To make copper pipes and wires, first you have to get Cu of very high purity. This requires smelters which are very capital and technology intensive. You will need foreign players to do this. Pipes and wires are not very high margin or even high labour business.

Regards

It is not complicated technology, you do not need more then couple of hunderds engjneers for establishing proper copper mills, what you say as exuse and probably parroting from the peopel who use that to justify their effortless explotation of those resource.

Then this is our fault that we did not care about it to get skill of minning and then pupurification from ore but what i think in the case of copper mining and all other process related with its purification we did not discover copper in the past in any part of pakistan before Saindak area in BALUCHISTAN so the reason of not getting such knowlege other wise we are mining and extracting chromite since long time from Baluchistan as one example.

All brothers and sisters complaining about why raw materials are sold raw and no benefits to locals.

Where is our local technical labor?
Technicians, Emgineers, Specialists, Environmentalists, Security specialists, Machine operators, Etc etc.
Is our country producing technical labor?.
Forget about locals can we even recruit specialists from big cities?.
Does our education institutes (Privately owned ones even) focus on providing such specialized diplomas that is equipping the youth with enough specialized skills?.
Whose fault is that?
Where is our copper refining industry? How many specialists we have in supply for this activity?
Why would a company export raw ore to a much developed country where technical labor is much expensive to refine it compared to our country?

Sir, it's a government's job to recognize the needs and challenges on the industry. The individual doesn't have to resources nor the expertise. You could have a degree in particle physics and then sit on your arse waiting for your chance to go abroad if the govt doesn't recognize the need for particle physicists, doesn't make policies to encourage and incentivize people to go into the field. A brilliant mind from a village will spend his life tilling the fields and barely surviving instead of being the next abdul qadeer khan, if his talent has nowhere to shine and his utmost concern is merely getting by and surviving.

This is why I say, if Pak had oil, it would still be bankrupt. Our leaders cant make deals on behalf of the nations (for fvks sake they dont even live in pakistan when not in power). Leaders of Iran literally have died trying to bring the oil back under Iranian control.

Government primariliy and to some extent culture.
But how is it fault of businesses investing on such ventures, thats my point.
And thats a very long and at this stage pointless discussion that in case of our beloved country whether people are bad due to bad government or Government is bad due to bad people (Murghi and Anda)
See Balochis have made there province a parriah because of this attitude.Same weird demands,More for locals despite knowing that no matter the reason locals are not skilled. What should be done?
Seriously what do people expect? Pay royalties to locals to sit idle or pay them engineers salaries for doing labor work?
How will advance industries pop up if we dont even start with the basic one?
