PIA plane escapes fatal crash in Muscat: Report

A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) aircraft escaped a fatal crash after its landing gear broke prior to landing on Monday, reported Express News.

The plane, coming from Sialkot, was landing in Muscat when the landing gear reportedly broke down.

The aircraft, however, successfully landed with all 150 passengers safe, reported Express News correspondent Aftab Khan.

A PIA spokesperson refuted the reports and said that the aircraft had only experienced a technical fault which did not cause any inconvenience.

PIA aircraft have experienced several technical faults in the past causing inconvenience to passengers.

MUSCAT: A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) passenger plane with about 70 people on board crash-landed on the runway of Oman’s main airport in Muscat on Monday, forcing the cancellation of all flights from the facility, a safety officer said on Monday.

Ali Al Zuwaidi, flight safety director at Muscat International Airport, said the pilot had reported no injuries among the passengers or crew.

“A PIA aircraft crashed on the runway after its landing gear collapsed,” Zuwaidi told Reuters. “We had to close the airport indefinitely until the investigation has been completed,” he added.

Zuwaidi said the scheduled flight by the Boeing 737 aircraft was arriving from Islamabad when it crash-landed.

Muscat airport is undergoing a $7.4 billon extension to expand its runway and terminal building.

They should ground all Boeing 737s and Airbus A-310s. Hopefully starting from next month PIA would get Airbus A-320s delivered

The airport was blocked for 2 hours.

Must have landed too hard as the rear Landing gears are designed to break away if come under excessive stress....Front one buckle under the fuselage..

Tough to say here, but a hard landing usually means that the MLG goes straight up kind of tearing through the whole assembly as it has locking hydraulics (down-lock) in place, while in this picture it is evidently very much slanted (clean by the look of it) meaning some sort of locking mechanism gone wrong. Maybe a hydraulic leak.

Anyways, whether was good at that time in Muscat, and it isn't a very tough airport to land at, airplanes suffer very very hard landings than this...and if the pilot managed to make this a hard landing, dur fittay mun..

Will try to get some more info on MLG though.

Here's a pic of the downlock:

The MLG collapsed after landing, and according to what I have heard, the aircraft covered some fair distance after landing, and the MLG collapsed after the reverse thrusters were deployed (evident from picture anyway).

SO my bet is downlock failing...
