Indra exercises commence at Mahajan fire range

21/10/2013 Itar-Tass

The Russian-Indian Indra-2013 exercises have commenced at the Mahajan field firing range, spokesman to the Eastern Military District, Lieutenant-Colonel Alexander Gordeyev told Itar-Tass.
“The opening ceremony involved Russia’s deputy chief of the Eastern Military District troops, Lieutenant-General Vladimir Tsilko and Indian servicemen. The Russian and Indian hymns have been performed. The flags of both countries and other participants in the maneuvers have been hoisted,” Gordeyev said.

Upon completion of the ceremony Russian and Indian servicemen marched. The ceremony involved about 500 servicemen of the combined force, the spokesman said.
The Indra exercises are being held in compliance with the Russian Defense Ministry’s plan on military cooperation. At least 250 servicemen from every country are involved in the maneuvers.
The first stage of the Indra-2013 exercises started on October 19. Two military transport aircraft of Russia’s Air Force arrived at the Suratgarh air base on Sunday, October 20. The aircraft carry servicemen of the 11th separate Air Assault Brigade (AAB) (the brigade is deployed in Ulan-Ude, Buryatia), a military source said.

“Totally about 500 people and over 30 units of equipment - the T-72 tanks and armored infantry carriers will take part in the first stage of the maneuvers,” the source said.
The purpose of the exercises is “to train joint actions to search for, persecuting and neutralizing illegal armed formations”, the source said.

Same location as Ex-Yudh Abhyas? Wish they have awesome videos like they had for yudh abhyas
Long Live Indo-Russia friendship!

Very unlikely, those "awesome videos" were produced by the US army. In PR terms the US is in a league of their own. The Indian military is still far too secretive and neglects PR.

Ohh; they are still bound by the OSA (Official Secrets Act) and an even more peculiar creature known as the DIR. :P

Troops of India and Russia are engaging each other in war games codenamed exercise “Indra” at the Mahajan range under scenarios and situations resembling South Sudan where Indian troops are presently deployed as part of UN peacekeeping mission and face similar challenges.

The joint field exercise between troops of the two countries began on October 22 and plans to carry out an anti-terrorist operation, involving the destruction of illegal armed formations. Russian troops will be using Indian military equipments, including the T-72 and BMP-2. “The essence of the exercise was under the UN peacekeeping environment.

When we thought about this exercise, it was something akin to South Sudan which is where we are still operating,” Brig VM Chandran, commander of the 6th Independent Armoured Brigade said. Elaborating about the current terrain, he said the Chidasa village in Gajner was made to resemble places in South Sudan
.

“This village has always been used for such exercises and we planned and constructed the houses in such a way that it s akin to buildings of South Sudan,” he said. In April, a Lt Colonel was among the five army personnel killed when their 32-member convoy came under attack in Gurmuck in the volatile state of Jonglei, South Sudan. Four others were injured in the attack. There are around 2,200 Indian army personnel operating in Sudan.
