Pentagon drones ‘8 to 14 times’ costlier than banned Chinese craft and less capable

Camera drones developed by the Pentagon are more expensive and less capable than those made in China, which they were intended to replace, according to an internal US government memo as seen by the Financial Times.

A note from an Interior Ministry official operating the US government’s largest private unmanned spacecraft warns that so-called “blue drones” are not enough to carry out important conservation work.

The Pentagon has spent more than $ 13 million developing drones that can be used by government agencies in place of drones manufactured or assembled in China. However, dissatisfaction with their cost and effectiveness shows the difficulties the United States faced trying to break away from Chinese technology without a clear US alternative.

A memo written by staff in January for the upcoming Biden administration states: [unmanned aerial systems]’If approved, the DoI sensor’s functionality will be reduced by 95%. .. ..The aircraft is designed for a very specific Department of Defense [Department of Defense] The mission is set and meets only about 20% of the DoI mission requirements. “

In addition, with an average cost of $ 2,100, it warns that the cost of a drone is eight to fourteen times higher than previously purchased aircraft by the department.

2019, Trump administration Ground each person Of the 810 drone in the sector, as they all contained Chinese parts.

The move is broad to limit US exposure to sensitive technologies, including 5G equipment manufactured by Chinese company Huawei, for fear that Beijing could use such hardware for espionage. It was part of the promotion.

Since the 2019 order, department officials have been able to resume drone flight to carry out open burning to prevent wildfires, but other things such as buying new aircraft and wildlife tracking. It was not possible to start the flight for the task.

Meanwhile, Congressman is discussing measures to ban federal funds from being used to buy drones manufactured or assembled in China.

The Pentagon has spent years and millions of dollars working with private companies to develop five drones that government agencies claim to be safe to use.

But according to Pentagon report Last year, at least four of them still contained a significant number of Chinese components, including circuit boards.

A government official said the Biden administration was reviewing the entire civilian drone fleet to see which aircraft could fly safely, but so far it has withdrawn its grounding orders during the Trump era. Absent.

The Home Office declined to comment.

Andrew Must, Deputy Director of the Defense Innovation Unit, a Pentagon division that helped develop the drone, said: .. .. It inherits some DoD-focused features that impact costs. DIU recognizes that these five systems are only the first step towards the rapid adoption of commercial UAS technology in government. “

He added that the Pentagon is trying to reduce the cost and improve functionality of drones that helped develop to meet the needs of other sectors.

Authorities are discussing the safety of flying the government’s existing drones, but DoI’s internal memo warned that legally mandated protection efforts were not being undertaken.

“In the current situation, it is nearly impossible for the department to comply with laws such as the John D Dingel Jr. Conservation, Management and Recreation Act,” he says. Above all, the act mandates the cartography and conservation of vast public lands.

They are probably referring to the UAVs made by this company. And as the video points out, it’s not really about the UAV but the AI software, in this case “Lattice” that is the real product. Used for base security. Hope Pakistan works with China to make something similar to give to the regular army as well as the FC.

And even with the so-called 100% made-in-USA drones, I doubt that there will be absolutely no Chinese parts inside.

Of course, I do not say that technologically, the US cannot manufacture them. However, with that logic, we can say that even Nigeria or Kenya can manufacture aircraft fighters if they have enough investment.

That is why US can never compete with China. China are master of cost control.

US will lose badly in an arm race with China.

I think you maybe wrong. The US make the drone cost 8-15 times more but still less capable than Chinese peer.
There is a lot of technology in a drone. Self return, power control, AI management, obstacle avoidance. All pack into a small and limited body. Its not that easy.

No no these Americans drones are vastly superior. America should rely on those. 🤫

Btw, the best part about the Pentagon report is their desperate roundabout way to admit that American capitalism has by nature failed the country and is killing it, vice versa drooling over the openess to innovation and efficiency of Chinese regulations. The exact opposite story we hear when their mouthpieces are trying to sell capitalism to us. 😂

well paid jobs means high product prices.

maybe in fact China military spending is really higher than USA, because they can make more things with the same amount of money.

How does this translate to larger UCAVs? Do Chinese UCAVs perform better than their American counterparts?

Did you actually bother to read the Pentagon report that the california news times article references? I guess not..

Who is the one who dont bother to read or practice selective reading? Definitely not me. The title clearly says it, Made in China is superior. In China, cheaper doesn't mean less sophisticated or less capable than counterpart from other countries,

Definitely US drone are overprice , scam product. :enjoy: Most of the US product are spend on greasely, fat and lazy white American worker who brag they can do better job than others,.

The problem of costs isn't the only issue -- but the components are Chinese and fear of hacking, etc., is what's concerning to the Pentagon.

go read the pentagon report it details the supply chain for sUAS - China dominates the supply chain for fuselage, electric motors and batteries. Software, controls, navigation and camera is all sourced from the US, Europe, Japan, Taiwan and S. Korea.

So no, software hacking is a red herring. The concern is around inadvertent or deliberate compromise of data. In other words, these units may be programmed by manufacturer to phone home and share data without the explicit consent of the owner/ operator of the unit.

the difference in cost is mainly labor and cost efficiencies derived from volumes of production.

so you prefer the much more palatable California times headline over the factual 184 page Pentagon Report.

Some more takes from the factual Pentagon report:

U.S. manufacturing is on decline
U.S. manufacturing base capabilities are on decline
U.S. manufacturing base capacity is on decline
U.S. manufacturing innovation base is on decline
U.S. machine tool sector is losing diversity and capacity to international competition
U.S. science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are on decline
U.S. trade skills are on decline
U.S. constant program changes in procurement practices have driven up cost without necessarily adding effectiveness (aka incompetence or corruption)?
U.S. business climate favours short-term shareholder earnings rather that longterm capital investment and deindustrialization?
Chinas GDP has grown at an average annual rate of 9.45 percent since 1978

They are not, what was the usual excuse, just begging for more budget, its all facts. You heard it here first.
