Hindu activists threaten Kerala Catholic nuns; nuns forced to change to civilian wear for safety

Two nuns were forced to change out of their religious habits into civilian clothes midway through a rail journey on March 19 to protect themselves and two postulants with them from possible attacks by right-wing Hindu activists. The group were traveling from Delhi to Rourkela in Odisha. The nuns were in their tradition habit, while the girls were in civilian dress. The postulants, who had joined the Sacred Hearts Congregation of the Delhi Province recently, were going home for Easter holidays and the nuns were accompanying them for safety.
According to a press release from the Kerala-based Syro-Malabar Church Media Commission, the group had reached Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, at around 7:30 pm when a few Bajrang Dal activists, who were returning from a pilgrimage, abused and harassed them and caused trouble said the press release issued by Father Jerry Joseph (Alex) Onampally, the commission secretary.
The Hindu radicals’ prime allegation was that the nuns were taking the postulants for religious conversion. The youths then began causing a commotion and as the train reached Jhansi station and accused the nuns of violating the state’s anti-conversion law.

The nuns were taken into custody by the police after they arrived at the Jhansi railway station, even though they had valid documents. The nuns and the postulants were quizzed for five hours and released after officials from Jhansi Diocese intervened by contacting senior police officials. The group was allowed to continue their journey the next day on another train with a police escort as they feared retaliation from the right-wing Hindu activists. The nuns are said to have had to change out of their religious habits and put on civilian clothes in order to avoid the attention of Hindu extremists.
The Syro Mallabar Church stated that it suspects a premeditated attack, considering that around 150 Bajrang Dal activists had assembled at the railway station at short notice.
It cited the nuns’ experience in Jhansi as the latest example of how the social conditions in India are becoming intolerant of other religions.
Meanwhile the Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council (KCBC) has demanded action from the Kerala Government, National Women’s Commission and Human Rights Commission. The KCBC has also demanded that the Indian Railways, Central Government and the Uttar Pradesh government look into the incident and take action against the culprits. Both Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, currently ruled by the pro-Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party, have enacted stringent anti-conversion laws.

Dair aaye durust aaye.

We should remember that it was the Catholic Church in Kerala who first floated the theory of Love Jihad which was then picked up by the Hindutvadis.

Now the Church realizes what the Hindutvadis are like.

Just a standard vibrant day and story coming out of India. Remarkable that the victims were the ones taken into custody. Shining India - setting an example to the world.
So you speak Hindi.

Cheers, Doc

Back again? Off topic remark? Nothing to interject about the topic and continue the Stockholm Syndrome? Trying to passify your masters so you dont get a slapping? Trying to be more TVA than the TVA brigade? Jeeez so predictable. Lets see how long you last before the pink sari comes out "DOC".

Edit....... you turned pink whilst in the middle of this post - the irony...... 8-)

I've respect for Christianity but Christians and their church in India are very morally and ethically weak/corrupt people. They follow caste system, Dalit becomes a Penta-coastal Christians, OBC a Latin Catholic, Upper castes become Syrian Christians and others.

They even dress up like Hindus.

I found only Muslims, some Sikhs and Buddhists, true to their faith and convictions. Not one step forward and not one step backwards. Even among Muslims only Sunni are have convictions. Many Shia have similar deviations like the Christians above.

No conversion bill should be passed as quickly as possible. Then only this can be stopped.

Those photos show these Christian priests sucking up to the Hindutvadis. From the "Daijiworld" embossment on the photos they seem to be from Mangalore city which is in Karnataka - a BJP ruled state.

I am not a prayer-and-ritual Sunni but I find some Indian Shia actions embarrassing. In this particular case, if they are so concerned about cattle, instead of them joining the gauraksha lynch gangs these Shia should strive to introduce lab-grown beef / meat into India.

Yes, that is Belgavi Karnataka, But below are from Kerala. Not BJP ruled but they still suck up to Hindutwadis, maybe they are planning to get political power by aligning with BJP. Now, that Congress is unlikely to get power at center. Congress in Kerala is a Christian party, beneath the surface.

Lab grown meat will never be viable, maybe an genetically modified substitute animal.

If it were Congress period they’d have been raped, maimed, killed, and burnt! Hence, India should always have BJP/RSS etc. in power....

When you have the real Hindutva why to bother about its copy???

What seems to be the problem ?

Nuns were travelling with civilian girls and Bajrang dal thought they were taking the girls for induced conversion which is ILLEGAL. So they called the police and the police investigated and set them free.

Seems perfectly Legal and civilized to me.

Wow !

Lab grown meat will never be viable, maybe an genetically modified substitute animal.

A substitute animal will still be a living animal whereas a lab-grown burger patty is a non-living meat growth derived from an animal without the animal being put to death.

Taking your accusation at face value, the kattar Upper Caste Hindus do not give the Lower Caste Shudras and Dalits the equality they deserve but when the Lower Castes obtain potential equality by converting to another religion the Upper Castes become furious.

Yeah, perfectly civilized.

I do not understand u'r raciest and Hinduphobic rant about "upper" caste and "lower" caste.

There is NO SUCH caste in the Indian constitution and certainly not in Hinduism and its scriptures.

Last I checked it was the Muslims of Delhi who attacked a Dalit colony for marrying a muslim girl and went to the colony and called them casteist slurs which itself is a hate crime. Not to mention the rioting and stabbing and acid attacks.

So last thing I want to hear from Indian muslim. is about "civilized behavior".

Then you should time-travel back to 1956 and prevent the Dalit leader, Babasaheb Ambedkar, and 365,000 of his followers from converting to Buddhism.

About scriptures, you travel farther back in time to 1927 and witness Ambedkar publicly burn the Hindu scripture Manusmriti.

Then you should travel back to current era and lecture the ghost of Dalit student Rohith Vemula on why he should not have committed suicide because of being oppressed by Upper Caste university officials and central government elements.

If you go to the thread about that incident I have said that the attack was wrong and the attitude of the girl's father was wrong.

Not to mention the rioting and stabbing and acid attacks.

Where were these ?

It's a way to harass the Indian Christians, they want to trap the Dalits in the caste system forever
