Pakistani Girl Beaten for Urdu Tattoo

22-year-old Saba Najam was at a Malad mall last week when some women beat her up over a tattoo on her back
A Pakistani national, who had come to pursue a course in production from Whistling Woods International Institute in Mumbai, was beaten up at a Malad mall last week for sporting a tattoo in Urdu on her back. The incident scared the girl so much that she left for Pakistan on Friday.

Saba Najam, 22, was roughed up at Hypercity Mall in Malad last Monday after some people spotted a tattoo in Urdu on her back. The incident took place at around 8.30 pm when Saba had gone to the washroom of the mall.
It said ‘Thank you god’

Some women suddenly approached her and assaulted her over the tattoo which read ‘Shukr Alham Du Lillah’, meaning ‘Thank you, God’.

Riyaz Ahmed Talukdar, a member of Jan Seva Sangh, a local NGO, had first spotted the tattoo on Saba’s back and informed his mother, Shabana Talukdar. Riyaz said, “When I saw the tattoo I was furious as holy words from the Quran were on her back.” Shabana, along with a few other women, then came to the mall in the next 15 minutes and confronted Saba in the washroom.

They slapped the girl several times before the mall management intervened.

“Since both the parties concerned are our patrons we simply referred the matter to the police,” said Manvir Singh, spokesperson of Hypercity Mall. The group, along with Saba, were taken to the Bangur Nagar police station.

Danaji Nalavde, inspector in-charge of crime at the police station, said, “There was nothing objectionable about the tattoo and there are no legal provisions under which we could have booked her. But since the group of people were agitated we asked Saba to give her statement in writing.”

In her statement Saba said she was sorry and that she would get the tattoo removed through laser surgery in the next three days. Nevertheless, the cops referred the matter to legal experts to see if they could book Saba for hurting religious sentiments or under any other legal provision.

No cases booked

On Friday night, however, Saba left for Lahore. Ravi Gupta, executive director of Whistling Woods said that Saba seemed extremely disturbed after the incident. “We had spoken to the cops who assured us that there was no case against her. We told her there was nothing to worry about but she was too scared.” Saba hails from Lahore in Pakistan and had come to Mumbai in 2007 on a student visa. She joined Whistling Woods in 2008.

She got the tattoo done from a tattoo parlour in Bandra in February 2008.

Saba was unavailable for comment. Meanwhile, Riyaz says he is happy Saba has left the country.

WTF so instead of catching the bitches who beat her the police was interesting in filing a case against her?

So the exception is the rule around here? Does this mean it is unsafe to travel by plane due to four fatalities per million hrs of flight? One foreign student is assaulted in India and suddenly India is no longer safe for foreign students? 32 students were killed in Virginia Tech, I suppose this means it is unsafe to study period!

Whats the problem with quran words on back, butt wherever? Americans wear national flag on bra.

Mam, the argument is not about education in a foreign country per se. Given the history between India and Pakistan, a student from Pakistan would be hesitant (to say the least) to even consider India to pursue professional studies given the hostilities involved.

Would you as an American pursue professional education in North Korea, Iran or Syria? I'm pretty sure your answer to this question would be "Hell no!"

my dear, india is unsafe for pakistanis! thats why our cricket team are not allowed to go their as GOI has already said they can no longer asure full security to pakistani team.
and first of all. no freaking million flight from pak to india! just few visitors go their and only few make it back safely without any problems. do keep in mind unless pakistanis disgise their idintity then they can survive their trip but if i am to walk in the streets of bombai with a pakistani flag i can asure you that will be my last day on earth.
this would not happen in UK US or even in some european countries where we have alot of south asian immigrants. last year some body from assam india hosted a pakistani flag and after not too long india flooded its media with anti-ISI pakistan propaganda about some ISI agents hosting that flag. i am in luton England and i have seen alot of soviet symbols in undergrounds and street walls but i dont see SKY news blasting russian spy agency about few symbols and flags.. carrying pakistani flag in the worlds largest democracy should not be a crime.

Dude we are dangerous people, no one alow us in any country. Pakistani ka naam sun kar logoon ka peshaab nikal jata hai. hehehehe

I am speaking right words in truth manner. This girl is having a TATTOO on the back, I disagree. In truly Muslims, we are not ALLOWED to have any tattoos in our part of body. It is wrong and absolutely idols. Nice word "Thank you, God" but no way tattoos.

Allah teaches us in Quran to remember and THANK HIM everyday in our minds and hearts if you can.

Good thing, she learned a hard lesson, no offense. :enjoy:

So then almost every pakistani deserves a beating for smoking not to mention (drinks) which is haram in islam.
as a muslim i would kindly tell her to remove that tatto but not lay my hands on her.

Of course, you are correct. We are moderate Muslims, we shouldn't be laying hands on people including men and women but we should communicate with them in to make understand. If she refuse it, that's fine and got result of what happened. Beating up is not right words.

In fact, she may think that she feel special to have tattoos by saying Thank you God on her back. That's good muslim but NOT. Hope you understood.

It's a really unfortunate incident but to be fair this kinda thing could have easily happened in pakistan too so don't blame all indians.
btw what a pathetic man he sees a tattoos on a young girl he doesn't like so he goes whining to his mommy about it who then goes and beats her up.Funny thing is i bet he was checking her out to be able notice and read a tattoo on her back lol
