* PML-N chief says dictatorial regimes ruined socio-economic progress
* Says country needs policy against US drone attacks

Staff Report

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif said on Thursday Pakistan’s nuclear command and control system was safe and more secure than that of any other country in the world.

Addressing the participants of a Yaum-e-Takbeer function, Nawaz said reports that anyone had access to the country’s nuclear assets were false.

He said the prestige of the country was not only linked to the availability of weapons but also with the progress in the fields of education, health and economic development.

He said the PML-N government had the courage to conduct nuclear tests 11 years ago, which made the country’s defence impregnable and thwarted the designs of Pakistan’s enemies. The PML-N chief said his party had never succumbed to pressure in the past, nor would it do in the future.

Ruined: Nawaz said dictatorial regimes had ruined the socio-economic progress of the country despite the fact that Pakistan was resource-rich and a nation of hard working people.

He said whatever progress was made in the country was under civil governments, but unfortunately the democracy was still in its infantile stage in the government.

Nawaz said although a democratic government was presently running the country, policies of former president Pervez Musharraf were still being followed.

He said no action had been taken against Musharraf for his victimisation of judges, the killing of hundreds of innocent countrymen, and his illegal acts against the constitution.

The PML-N chief said his party was ready to unconditionally support the government and it had earlier exhibited that by setting an example of supporting the government despite being in the opposition.

He called on the people to set aside differences and stand united to bring the country out of the current crises.

Drones: Nawaz said a consensus policy against missile attacks by United States’ drones was the need of the hour, adding that the strikes violated the country’s sovereignty.

He also stressed the need for promoting social and economic justice through good governance so that a corruption-free society could be established.

Nawaz said his party wanted Pakistan to have friendly relations with neighbouring countries and wanted to get the Kashmir issue resolved according to the aspirations of the Kashmiris.
