LAHORE: It seems there will be no good news for passengers as 50 trains have been closed, Geo News reported. There is no diesel to run engines beyond Tuesday and officials who met President Asif Ali Zardari returned in an effort to seek some respite from the crisis disappointed.

According to Pakistan Railways officials, cheques issued to PSO, WAPDA and Sui Gas bounced and electricity to 30 stations has been shut while gas connections to 30 railway colonies have also been disconnected.

Officials add that employees have not been paid their salaries and they are protesting against the non-payment across the country

this is really getting serious. Best option would be to have a serious overhaul of the system of the railway, get better engines, proper oil, and get private investors into it with their share. Because a private businessman will have more enthusiasm to do better than the Government.

Railway is never a option for private investor. First thing, it will required very huge investment , ROI is too slow and late .. Bank needs to loan huge sum of money to private investors which can get default . Railway is fro people's welfare .. private company can't compete with transport companies with lower prices.
Government is only option with resources like land and money at their disposal ... only thing you need is better management .. with this state of PR I think one has to change way it operates .. start trains on busy routes with new image and marketing strategy , put new and better infra in place and replicate same across the country

sucks to see civilians suffering. hopefully your administration takes corrective action

Railways is employing 90,000 people !!!

Profits = Zero
Trains = Zero
Employees = 90,000 people

Pakistan Railways need to lay off 80,000 workers
Get 2 Billion USD , and invest in Engines

Hire 10,000 workers on need to need basis

Government gives bail , the 90,000 people get their salaries and then sit and do nothing

& study Indian railways...and implement its sucessful goals

The employees and management have both become , beggars instead of working they feel that its their birth right to get bail outs after bail out while they sit and eat the salaries away and not doing their work

Specially stuff like maintaining engines or filing reports of irregularities and corroption

150 engines were bought in 2008 , and in 2-3 years the engineers and workers ruined all 150 engines and seek more bail outs?

WTH!? Your railways and our national carrier, both are in the same boat. :lol:

railways are the growth engine of a nation specially for one of the most populated nations.

pakistan can't progress without the revival of its railways and power sector.

How would the pakistan railways support the logistic requirement of the pakistan army in case of a war?

Some media houses and Economist also want to divest equity in Indian Railway,and IR to be should be listed on BSE,complete professionalism can save these government dogs.

Maybe engineers of Pakistan should be trained internationally in USA, India, China etc

Its not matter of being educated , just by looking at the figure of 90,000 employees !!! You know where the problem lies

Are people pushing the railway trains 100 employees pushing trains that they need 90,000 employees !!

What is happening is 90,000 employees sit and wait for money to come when money is invested the first thing they do is they process everyone's payroll !!! and then money is gone and they begin crying again there is no cash

There were 5-10 billion rupees invested just 2 months ago back then the railway cheif stated that they will purchase 50 engines just give us the bail out when the money was granted !!! Next week the cheif stated .. well we issued payroll all the money is gone

What the government needs to do is

a) Fire all the 90,000 workers
b) Hire new graduates , low salaries 10,000 workers who know how to use computers
c) Automate ticket purchasing with computers / telephone orders
d) Invest 1 billion USD in to locomotives
e) Outsource the maintenance of engines to China for first 5 years after deal

There are 200-300 locomotives sitting in Pakistani yards, and which could be fixed with spare parts and maintenance but the Railway cheifs are not interested because then they would not get lavish bail outs !!

The need for country is 1000 Locomotives , in 2005 Musharif purchased 150 locomotives back then we had 240-300 locomotives . He created workshops so we would locally produce 5 locomoties per year

By that account we should have had 350-400 Locomotives

But what happened was that Railways heads thought , if we fix the locomotive issue we will never get the bail outs any more !!! and this is why neglect happened and we are now in bad shape

Look at this sentence patterned after yours above, and you will see why the whole country works on this principle:

"But what happened was that Pakistan's rulers thought , if we fix the socioeconomic issue we will never get the bail outs any more !!! and this is why neglect happened and we are now in bad shape."
