Pakistan opposes new permanent members to UNSC

NEW YORK: Pakistan has said use of the veto in the United Nation’s Security Council prevented a resolution of the longstanding dispute of Kashmir and hindered implementation of UN Resolutions on the issue, says a press release received on Thursday.

Speaking in the intergovernmental negotiation process on Security Council reform, Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi said those calling today for the extension of the veto to new permanent members of the Security Council at the same time criticise its use or abuse.

Reiterating the country’s position that Pakistan was opposed to adding new permanent members to the Council with or without a veto, she said that any privileged role in decision making contradicts the shared goal of making the Security Council more democratic, representative and accountable.

“Pakistan supports expansion of the Security Council only in the non-permanent category”, she added

The debate at the UN Wednesday was on the issue of veto, which Pakistan’s Permanent Representative insisted must be tackled as part of a comprehensive reform of the Security Council.

Ambassador Lodhi said that Pakistan’s proposal does not create any hierarchy of status or privilege, such as veto; it only provides additional, equitable and equal opportunity for States, that wish to shoulder more responsibility for maintenance of international peace and security.

Strongly opposing deferment of veto issue, Ambassador Lodhi said that Pakistan considers veto as an important key issue that needs to be tackled as part of a comprehensive reform of the Security Council.

Pakistan does not support any proposal that aims to defer consideration of this key issue or leave open the possibility of its extension to other members through a review process”, she added.

Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi warned the UN that if the values of the 21st like democracy, equal opportunity and non-discrimination were ignored in reforming the Council, it would run the grave risk of making the United Nations, a “Divided Nations”.

Pakistan, she said, believes that ideally the veto should be abolished. “But being cognizant that such proposals could themselves be vetoed, we support pragmatic approaches and measures that could restrict or limit the use of veto”, she added.

Referring to the previous debates, Pakistani envoy said that much emphasis was placed on effectiveness of the Council and its decision-making. “If today the Council remains paralyzed and deadlocked over reconciling to accommodate the interests of the five permanent members, how will it cope with the interest of more such members?”, she questioned.

She concluded by reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to work towards genuine convergence among member states, which can only be achieved by reconciling opposing views, aimed at achieving the widest possible political support. “This requires flexibility and accommodation on the part of all delegations”, she said.

Understandable. Already weak on the foreign policy front an India on the council and with veto power would be a nightmare for Pakistan. Kashmir will take a backseat forever once India reaches that point.

Who cares.....?

You obviously do, as firstly you are on this site and secondly you responded.

Good, things should stay as they are. Anyway, it's not an important issue as they will never allow new members. The five permanent members sit quite pretty and don't want nay change, regardless of the "support" they offer.

India should focus on economy and diplomacy and aimed to become 3 largest economy in a decade. Will get the seat automatically even though getting permanent seat is becoming more a symbolic except the case of kashmir comes.

When was the last time, Pakistan moved any resolution at UNSC, if ever.

How will India getting UNSC seat right now, effect the 70 year old UNSC resolution? India can not undo the old, already passed resolution, all it can do, is block anymore UNSC resolutions that are tabled by Pakistan. But then so can Russia on India's behalf. And when has Pakistan ever tabled a UNSC resolution on Kashmir.

Pakistan is just insecure, because it imagines itself as India's equal can not tolerate India rising to higher echelons.

Indian UNSC seat is not a zero sum game for Pakistanis.

India right now is squarely in middle of the pack with average military and economy. Only thing it has got going for it is latent potential which dwarves all but China. Hence the time is not right.

Wait a decade and a half for India to get ahead of the crowd with third largest GDP and domestic arms industry equipped military and security council will come begging.

15 years is within our lifetime. Future generations will get a fire proof India.

ciao

They can create some obstacles with the help of china but that will not last for ever. There are many countries who openly supports indian candidacy for permanent member including many arab countries.Every country looking for their self interest and not kashmir issue.

Pakistan can cry all you want...Please don't allow India in this...or that....or you can even ask the support of your ring master China who does monkey play with you.
Whatever is the casr...We won't bulge an inch in issues like Kashmir , Siachin..sir creek..balochistan...
India is in a different category now.. wait and see ...like waiting for a public guarantee of security from Indian government for the cricket team..

Most countries oppose additional Permanent Security Council members. Well close to all.

Unless, unless the rules of the power of the PSCMs are changed, each additional country just has that much more power to cancel out any action by the UN.

Already you had China, Russia prevent actions on N. Korea.

Unless the power of the Veto is modified new members are useless.

Those who are making this about India vs Pakistan are just bullshitting themselves with nationalism.

Wet dreams and nothing else but dreams. Japan and Germany have been economic powerhouses for almost six decades. Did they get the seat automatically?

The only one crying here is you. You've mentioned China quite a few times now, it must pain you in some way. Get it out of your system, then we can talk.
In all honesty no one is expecting you to budge, why would you? Lol@Baluchistan, take a trip down there and see how you're received. The troubles are nearly at an end, the jackboots of tens of thousand of Baluch troops have seen to that.
What's the point about taunting us regarding the cricket team? It's on your head if anything happens to them. If you can't keep the pudus of the RSS, Shiva Sena and whoever else the hell you have trumpeting the nationalist cause, then it's going to hurt your public image.
