Pakistan, Germany sign defence cooperation agreement
Pakistan and Germany on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defence cooperation.
The MoU is for the protection of classified military information of the two countries, according to Pakistan's Minister of State for Defence Zahid Hamid.
"It is about rendering mutual assistance to one another. It will serve our purpose," German Defence Minister Dr Franz-Josef Jung told reporters after talks with his Pakistani counterpart Rao Sikandar Iqbal.
"It shows that we are further developing our good relations. We have already offered support in training. We will do so in future, " said Jung.
"We have good cooperation with Pakistan, especially in military training and education and the cooperation will further intensify, " he said.
The German defence minister said that the two countries had agreed to further develop good bilateral relations and to further intensify relations.
Jung said that Pakistan was playing an important role in war against terrorism. "It is our common responsibility to fight against terrorism," he said.
He said that Pakistan was also playing an important role in development and peace process of Afghanistan, adding that democracy and stability in Afghanistan was not only for Afghans but it was for the entire region.
The German defence minister said that he was visiting Pakistan to express sympathies over the losses of Oct. 8 earthquake.
"German response to the earthquake was very quick. Germany has sent helicopters to help in relief work and still we would do what we can to help the government and the people of Pakistan affected by quake," he said. "We are staying here till February. Our 2 helicopters will stay after the NATO withdrawal."
He said that Germany would continue support to help the earthquake survivors, adding that he handed over medical equipment to Pakistan on Thursday.
