PESHAWAR: Pakistan has declared over 1,000 years old Hindu temple at the historical Panj Tirath site in Peshawar as national heritage.

Provincial Government Directorate Archaeology and Museums has issued a notification to declare the Panj Tirath site as national heritage.

A fine of upto Rs 2 million and five years’ imprisonment will be imposed if anyone found guilty of damaging the historical site.

The historical site and temples are located inside the Chacha Younus Family Park and has been in dire need of rehabilitation.

Panj Tirath is an over 1,000 years old archaeological site and is situated at Hashtnagri. The archaeological site got the Panj Tirath name from the five pools of water there. It has two temples and a spacious lawn with Peepal and other trees.

The site is considered one of the most sacred places for the Hindus which has been turned into a family park.

Panj Tirath has been mentioned in Hindus religious book “Hindu Mythology.” A writer, Lord Hinger, mentioned that five Pando brothers started living in this place which later came to be known as Panj Tirath.

It said that the Pando brothers then left the place but their followers made five pools there in their memory and established a temple called “Shawal Thakurdwara.”

They believed that the water cured all kind of diseases. Later it was renamed as Panj Tirath.

/do hindus pray in this place nowadays?
Yes their are polytheists in Peshawar who carry out their religious duties unperturbed.Kudos young man
NB: "Hindu" is a British concocted term to define all the vast and very different polytheistic beliefs in their artificial entity that was "British India", hence I use the more appropriate term "POLYTHEIST" as British India is no more.

Indian Muslims are not like Pakistani Muslims. So stop being proud of Pakistanis.
For once we are on the same page young man.Kudos

Good move, issue is the large Hindu community is in Sind, so it’s upkeep may have to be done by paid help.
But anyway it is part of our heritage.

These reactions feed into the conversation that Pakistani Prime Minster Imran Khan initiated in December 2018 when he tweeted: “Naya Pakistan is Quaid’s [Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s] Pakistan and will ensure that our minorities are treated as equal citizens, unlike what is happening in India”.

@Indus Pakistan , as usual you have the honours to give your views?

I hope its not to late. Good gesture by governing bodies to ensure cultural and religious heritages are preserved.
Monuments have there own ways of telling the history, probably preserving the same is one more addition to the stories that this site will tell to future generations.

once again, Pakistan showing it's enlightenment where as India is sliding backwards from destroying mosques to banning public prayers.

Good good. Yes our ancestors used to be idol worshippers too but islam changed that. We should be proud and keep herirage sites like these for future references.

Unlike india where they are renaming cities and destroying mosques to erase muslim identity of places.

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government has declared the ancient Hindu religious site of Panj Tirath in Peshawar as a national heritage site, according to Gulf News.

Social media users praised the move as one towards tolerance and unity.

Panj Tirath is named after the five pools of water present at the site which also houses a Hindu temple and a lawn with date palm trees.

The announcement was made under the K-P Antiquities Act of 2016 by the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums.

Moreover, the provincial government also announced a fine of Rs2 million fine, as well as, a five-year jail sentence for anyone found guilty of damaging the historic site.

The site holds religious significance to local Hindus who believe that King Pandu from the Mahabharata, a Hindu mythological epic, bathed in the pools and worshipped under the date palm trees for two days.

The temple has faced deterioration with parts of the Panj Tirath site cleared in the 1970s to make area for the K-P Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Chacha Yunus Park.
