Pakistan Army to acquire 100 state of the art Main Battle Tanks and 62 new JF-17 jets . from China
13 Jan, 2019
ISLAMABAD - With the intention of achieving a decisive edge against India, the Pakistan Army has constantly been engaged in strengthening its defense preparedness. Towards this, the Pakistan Air Force will add 62 new JF-17 jets in the next three years against India's 36 Rafale fighter jets.
To overcome its shortage of tanks in the Pakistan Army Armoured Corps, the country also intends to add 600 new MBTs over the next few months. It is already procuring about 100 Chinese VT4 – a third generation MBT with an engine of 1200 horsepower and speed of 70 kilometers per hour.
"Pakistan wants such a tank in which there is a computerized fire control system and would be able to hit targets within a range of 3 to 4 kilometers.

Tanks news is there for a while but i think they are sticking to al khalid 1

PA plans are

Al-Khalid 1 (in production)+ Al Haider (VT4) (finalized IDEAS 2018) + Oplot T-84 upgrades for T-80Us (MOUs signed and work started) + Al Khalid 2 (still in development)

So the tank induction plans are huge and in implementation phases.

Pakistan should consider 1500 HP engine for the VT-4 tank. Note that Chinese Type 99 tank is powered by a 1,500HP diesel engine, derived from the German MB871ka501 diesel technology.

T-80 numbers should have been increased or completely taken out of equation.

As for AK, PA should have given AK a TUSK like upgrade (similar to M1A2) and used it in urban combat (western border) also. Lessons learnt would have been in upgrade of a AK-1 version as urban MBT, as well as capture international market.

In urban warfare scenario most of the prospective countries have their own programs.

No need for a MBT to be developed for urban combat, they are intended for eastern border use, PA's strategy of using light tanks like the Al-Zarrar and T59/69s for urban warfare is enough and has generated superb results. Al-Zarrar armor has been able to handle whatever thrown at them so far and to top it off militant access to more advanced anti tank weapons has been unsuccessful and unlikely.

Chinese VT-5 will be the ideal light tank replacement when PA decides to replace these but at the moment not a priority. Terrain on western border is also more favorable for light tanks, MBTs will be at a terrain disadvantage and will have logistics/transport issues.

Modern current gen wireless Top Attack Anti-Tank Missiles could have been useful as well

There will be no urban warfare on the western front!
Even if there were few encounters I doubt IA will reach Lahore or PA will reach Amritsar . Concentrated densely populated urban Zones will be unlikely to be penetrated by both sides . In such a case the T-90MS of IA will be a considerable opposition to Pakistani tanks this is the main reason why PA is trying to field VT-4 .
