Muslim leaders have slammed Congress general
secretary Shakeel Ahmed's 'irresponsible'
remarks on Indian Mujahideen.
NEW DELHI: Congress general secretary
Shakeel Ahmed's tweet that the 2002
Gujarat riots led to the formation of
terror outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM)
seems to have backfired. Muslim leaders
said such an "irresponsible" remark,
made with an eye on the 2014 Lok
Sabha polls, would harm rather than
help the community.
Community leaders demanded the
Congress and the BJP stop the one-
upmanship to woo Muslims. "This won't
help any party in getting votes. People
can see through such ploys," said Niaz
Ahmed Farooqui, secretary, Jamiat
Ulama-i-Hind, the largest body of Sunni
clerics in India, adding, "Political
parties would do well to remember that
corruption and development are the two
main issues people are concerned with."
Community leaders held the Congress
and the UPA government responsible
when Muslims were targeted after every
blast.
All India Muslim Personal Law Board
working committee member Dr S Q R
Ilyas came out strongly against Ahmed's
assertion. "If he (Shakeel Ahmed) is
trying to say Muslims reacted to 2002
riots through terrorism, I refute his
claim. IM is a fabrication of the
Intelligence Bureau. In the name of
terrorism, the UPA government and the
NDA before them are targeting a
community and playing with our
country's security," he said.
"A responsible leader like Shakeel
Ahmed shouldn't have said this. It's
become a global phenomenon to link
Muslims to terrorists," said Maulana
Yasoob Abbas, spokesperson of the All
India Shia Personal Law Board.
Dr Zafarul-Islam Khan, president of the
All India Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat
(AIMMM), an umbrella body of Muslim
organizations, stressed the Muslims
have nothing to do with the IM. "It's an
outfit floated either by the IB or
Pakistan's ISI. The NIA chargesheet (to
which Ahmed referred while making his
IM claim) is vague and unconvincing,"
said Khan.
Muslim leaders demanded the Congress
and the UPA government come clean on
this. While Dr Zafarul-Islam Khan of the
AIMMM demanded the government
come out with a white paper on the IM,
Maulana Yasoob Abbas wondered why
probe into any of the blasts have
reached no conclusion.
Sharique Ansar, national secretary of
the Students' Islamic Organisation of
India, said, "Whenever there is a blast,
IM is named as the perpetrator. But the
continuous chain of blasts proves the
mastermind is still at large. Why?
Instead, innocent youth are being
framed and their lives destroyed."
