Nuclear power plants for Bangladesh

Grt leap towards development of BD.......best of luck guys.........always go for the best.....

We have to wait till 2017 before any of these power stations come on line. What are we to do till then - use candles? This is not an energy policy it is merely another of Sheikh Mujib's dreams but in the head of Hasina.

Cool down bro. we are going to enjoy whatever Mujib, Zia, Ershad, Khalida have left for us:) easy as that! Hasina has at least taken the step without thinkning about the possibility she might not be in the post in 2017! lol :P Why are you so skeptical about a "policy"? lets see what the government does to face the current situation:cheers:

Dhaka, Apr 1 (bdnews24.com)—Bangladesh may sign an agreement with Russia on installation of a nuclear power plant by this month if the ongoing negotiations end successfully, an official told bdnews24.com Wednesday.

The talks that started Tuesday in Dhaka will have concluded Thursday, M M Neazuddin, joint secretary at the science ministry who is heading the Bangladesh team, said.

Once the deal is signed, Bangladesh will ask for bid documents in a short time, he added.

"We would discuss financial involvement on Thursday. We briefed them about our power situation, transmission capacity and work force," he said.

A high-level team of Russian nuclear experts by Vladimir Averkiev, head of international co-operation of Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation, is currently in talks. Nikolay Poznyakov, head of external affairs of International relations department, is the other delegate.

The ministry will make a final decision after consulting the prime minister, an official who wanted to remain unnamed said.

"Before the final deal, we have to sign a bilateral treaty," the official, with direct knowledge of the matter, said.

Bangladesh has the International Atomic Energy Agency's approval to set up a nuclear power plant, he added.

"We already have fulfilled all the necessary condition. If necessary, they will provide us technical assistance."

Bangladesh needed to review the power generation act, he said.

Ministry sources said Russia was interested to provide loan, probably o easy terms, rather than grant. The Economic Relation Division will settle the conditions.

Russia supplied 10 nuclear power plants last year and have supplied as many as 65 plants to Iran, India, China, Armenia, Ukraine, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Finland, Bulgaria and Germany.

Currently it is constructing 11 power plants in countries.

Dhaka, Moscow agree to sign deal this month
M Abul Kalam AzadBangladesh and Russia yesterday agreed on their proposals for setting up nuclear power plants in Bangladesh and signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in this regard at the end of this month.

"A draft proposal has been finalised on the basis of mutual understanding to sign the MoU...A Russian minister is expected to visit Dhaka at the end of this month to sign it," MM Neazuddin, joint secretary to the Science and ICT ministry, said yesterday.

The draft was prepared following a three-day talk with a two-member Russian delegation on peaceful use of nuclear energy. Neazuddin led the Bangladesh side at the talks.

The visiting Russian delegation led by Vladimir Averkiev, head of international cooperation of Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation, briefed Bangladesh officials about Russia's nuclear technology and ability to set up plants.

At the talks they expressed Russia's keen interest in assisting Bangladesh in this regard while Bangladesh articulated its desire to set up two 1000MW power plants.

On the final day of the talks yesterday, the two sides were supposed to discuss the estimated cost of a power unit. However, the Russian team did not show any interest and said they would give an idea if the two sides reach a final decision.

An official of the science and ICT ministry meanwhile said, "Russia has set up nuclear plants in other countries from where we can have an idea about the costing."

According to a paper prepared by the ministry, the estimated cost of a 1000MW nuclear power plant ranges between $1.5 billion and $2 billion. Experts say installation of such a unit will take at least five years since commissioning of the deal for the project.

The ministry official said they would analyse the outcome of the talks and prepare a proposal to submit to the higher authority soon. "The government, which assumed office with the promise to improve the volatile power situation, is willing to strike a deal with a country soon so that installation of the power unit can be started immediately," he said.

Neazuddin was hopeful about completing necessary formalities for this by the end of this month. Experts say Bangladesh may need two more years to complete its preparation to improve the safety and environmental standards at the site.

Bangladesh has been negotiating with several countries for setting up nuclear power units. Recently, Dhaka sought assistance from South Korea in this regard. France and China have also shown interest in helping Bangladesh develop nuclear power plants while Bangladesh has bilateral agreements on nuclear cooperation with the United States, France and China.

The other member of the Russian delegation that arrived in Dhaka early last week was Nikolay Poznyakov, head of external affairs of Russian International Relations Department.

Acting Chairman of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) Mohammad Liaquat Ali, its former chairman Shafiqul Islam, BAEC Director and Project Director Shawkat Akbar, and Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Director Rafiqul Islam were on the Bangladesh team.

I take Chernobyl positively as after that accident a lot of modification done in nuclear technology all accross the glove. The safey measures are now automated without any human involvement. Russians and Americans were the one who had experience in dealing with accidents. Also russian nuclear technology is second best after USA.
With this deal we will be dealing with Russian govt with bilateral agreement but with French we have to deal with some company and our experience with companies are bitter, for instance Oxydental and Nyko. Dont forget Union Carbide in India.

Yes, we already have a proto type in Ruppoor since 1961. There will be 2 Plant. One is in Rooppur another site is not selected yet. My gutts feeling, Chittagong. Rooppur will feed Dhaka, the other one will feed chittagong.

Russians will supply fuel. It will be a package deal.:enjoy:

The Nuclear power plant
must be built Bangladesh  needs cheaper electricity,
to reach the rural areas of the country also.
If this is completed many Bangladeshis in Dhaka
will be able to afford electricity, this really will help
the many people.
