New Delhi tops the list of most polluted cities in the world

493

India's capital New Delhi has the most polluted air in the world, according to an air quality watchdog.

Two other Indian cities, Kolkata and Mumbai, also made the dirty top 10, at numbers six and nine, respectively, said Swiss-based IQ AirVisual late Friday.

"For nine consecutive days from Sunday, October 27, 2019, overall Delhi air quality was in the hazardous zone, a level at which the entire population is likely to be affected," said an IQ AirVisual statement.

Schools in Delhi were closed on Thursday and Friday as the air quality in the city reached dangerously high levels.

Pollution has peaked in New Delhi since the Indian festival of Diwali was celebrated on Oct. 28. A health emergency was declared in the capital last month after an overall Air Quality Index (AQI) figure close to 459 was reached.

AQIs between 401 to 500 are considered severe. Above 500 is considered very severe, and emergency measures are required to control the pollution.

India's Supreme Court has made scathing comments over government inaction in the face of pollution.

The Environmental Pollution Control Authority (EPCA), the panel mandated by the top court, said the air quality in New Delhi and its region was extremely poor. Due to this, all types of construction work was banned.

One of the main pollution sources in India, if not the main, is privately-owned vehicles. The Supreme Court should take the matter into its control and ban privately owned vehicles and promote mass public transport ( buses essentially ) and taxis ( car taxis ) and CNG-fueled autorickshaws.

In India, the government answer to traffic problems seems always to be build a flyover. But this will create more pollution. The thinking among the public will be, "Oh there's a new flyover, let 's buy a new car or motorcycle". Thus, there will be a few hundred more vehicles, bought on loan of course, added to the already full traffic. This all is not scientific.

Even if all privately-owned, petrol-fueled vehicles are turned into electric cars ( like Tesla ), the pollution will not stop. Imagine the pollution created by manufacture of millions of these electric cars. This is what the Singapore government told Elon Musk that he is selling a lifestyle to people and any realistic pollution reduction will happen by people adopting public transport.
