New airport plan sparks protests

Several thousand people formed a human chain and barricaded Dhaka-Mawa highway at Hasara in Munshiganj for four hours yesterday demanding that the proposed Bangabandhu International Airport be shifted elsewhere.
The airport is to be built covering a vast area including agricultural and wetlands in three upazilas of Dhaka and Munshiganj.
Traffic movement on the highway remained suspended from 10:00am to 2:00pm due to the barricade, causing tailbacks and consequent sufferings to thousands.
The demonstrators vandalised several vehicles and set fire to an arch on the highway.
Agitated people from different areas of Dohar and Nawabganj upazilas in Dhaka and Sreenagar upazila of Munshiganj gathered at Hasara and blocked the road. They formed an 8-kilometre long human chain from Shologhar to Nimtoli in Sreenagar.
The protesters carried placards demanding that the proposed airport be built in some other district.
Lakhs of people will become unemployed if the airport is constructed at the propossd site, they claimed.
Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Traffic movement resumed after 2:00pm.
Later, Officer-in-Charge Shakhawat Hossain of Sreenagar Police Station said the situation is normal.
In a related development, a small number of people formed a human chain at Chhonbari in Sreenagar in support of building the proposed airport at its present site.
Meanwhile, Dhaka and Munshiganj district authorities have started the process of acquiring over 25,000 acres of land in Sreenagar, Nawabganj and Dohar for the airport.
Of these,10,895 acres are wetland in Sreenagar, 7,017 acres are in Nawabganj and 7,188 acres in Dohar.
