ISLAMABAD - The Senate was informed on Thursday that “Solar Auto Rickshaw” technology has successfully been developed indigenously to help overcome the acute shortage of energy and rising costs of fuel.

The Minister for Science and Technology Mir Changez Khan Jamali told the House in a written reply during question hour that M/s United Services International Group (USIG) of Lahore and Pakistan Institute of Technology for Minerals and Advance Engineering Materials Lahore had developed the technology through collaborative research.

He said the rickshaw was now ready for operations and would use solar energy instead of petrol or Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). He further said the cost of one solar auto rickshaw was about Rs 2, 30,000 which could be easily covered in one year, adding that its normal speed was 50 to 70 kilometres per hour.

The solar rickshaw operated on five solar panels along with five batteries and was driven by one Direct Current (DC) Motor.

He also said that on the request of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) government and World Food Programme (WFP), the ministry had proposed that 50,000 tons of wheat out of PASSCO’s reserves should be donated to the WFP for IDPs. The cost of over Rs 1.5 billion would be handled by the federal government. -

How much does a CNG or fuel rickshaw cost? It would be nice to follow up the post with the price difference and how it will affect demand. What is the average life of the batteries and which company is providing the panels? Those things depend on how costs can be recovered by the user of this vehicle. What would be the point of using this vehicle to recover the cost in one year when it will die the very next.

Less Noise Pollution
Less dependence on Gas
Less dependence on Oil
Natural product

Its project like these that give you independence if local corporations invests in the idea

Good move but fairly risky since the Panels will have to be either completely in light or completely in dark. If partially exposed to light, this might cause damage in the generation structure. Being a movable platform, the rickshaw will be highly prone to this risk.

Start the prototypes, would be interesting to see how it performs.

This.

Railway, metro buses, and we have saved the public quite amount of money.

Flop show, it will also die like water car...

This kind of innovation happen all day in Indian Engineering colleges. Kids make this kind of gadgets..

No need to waste time on such small things...

and how to protect those panels from thieves

Interesting. But how to save anything from thieves. Rickshaw parts are already heavily stolen with a bazaar full of spares where they are sold. It has to be something which cannot be left in the open exactly like the existing ones right now.

Its a good concept but the way our rickshaws are used they will not be feasible. They should come out and give what HP is given with the setup. 6 batteries is a good amount depending on wht type of batteries are being used. Since the total cost is given a good solid setup is far from that price. 15k each for dry batterries on the low side come to 80k. Add up the rest of the panels and other things and I would run out of money for the engine or what kind is it?
