According to the news of Abdullah Karakuş from Milliyet newspaper, the Machinery and Chemical Industry Corporation (MKEK) is developing "Naval Gun" for the ships.

Under 76/62 mm Naval Gun Development Project: “While the procurement time of this weapons system abroad is 24 months, it is planned to start factory acceptance tests within 12 months of the prototype to be produced with domestic facilities within national design. After the MKEK started to localize its weapon system, the overseas supplier firm lowered the unit price to passivate development project. New developing weapon system will be used on med-to light tonnage ships in the Navy inventory. ”

Because of fast intervals on long range shooting, Naval Gun development differs from standard howitzer and guns, therefore, the development and production of naval guns is really difficult process.

Not much information has been shared about the project details yet. However, in the Turkish Navy inventory, Italian OTO Melara 76 mm Naval guns are using broadly. In the Turkish Navy inventory, OTO Melara 76 mm ship guns are used in Gabya-class frigates, ADA-class corvettes and Rüzgar, Dogan, Yıldız and Kılıç-class patrol/missile corvette and boats. Also In the latest news, it was observed that 76 mm main gun was added to the Burak class corvettes, which are the old ships.

________
"Actually MKEK's domestic ship artillery project is not new. Since 2010, MKEK produced the cannon part of gun systems, under license of the Italian Otomelara and it was both sold to Italy and the Turkish Navy.

The countries that produce and sell this system widely in the world are Russia and Italy. The rest is producing under license. If Turkey could succesfull on indigenization this system, the use of imported weapons will completely cease to exist on their ships or an alternative has been created for each group of weapons."

________

OTO Melara 76 mm gun system has 3 different versions called Compact, Super Rapid and Strales Systems. Turkish Navy ships use the Compact model in a large extent, but on the new ships, mostly prefer Super Rapid model.

In addition, according to the information obtained by Defense Turk, studies on suitable ammunition groups for Naval Gun are carried out by MKEK also.

The fire control system that can be used in this Naval Gun system is currently being produced by ASELSAN. This system is used in ADA class corvettes produced within the scope of MİLGEM Project. In addition, ASELSAN is developing a fire control system for a larger caliber such 127 mm naval gun also. https://www.defenceturk.net/mkek-gemiler-icin-deniz-topu-gelistiriyor

So one of the reasons behind developing 76mm naval cannon domestically is to reduce the procurement time, which is fair enough. If Turkey wanted to churn out ships, the armament would be one of the hang-ups. I just hope all the mechanisms are well researched and developed. Employing same companies Aselsan did in developing 35mm KORKUT SPAAG would be advantageous.

We need serious research into naval propulsion, I fear it will be next to be hit by shadow embargoes.

I just voiced my major concern on the engine part in another thread. I'm kinda hoping for some divine intervention here.

Do we have any companies who have some experience and technology in naval propulsion? We usually have programs in nearly all aspects of weapons systems and subsystems but we are noticably quite on the naval front. Given the example set by Altay, this seems like a situation that is bound to blow up in our face.

No it wont, naval propulsion is not such a big issue, many options.

We should instead develop a big naval gun that shoots MKEK into the ocean.

Come on, please don't say that. Which other propulsion system do we use other than from Germany or Italy ?

I don't understand this joke of yours MKE has been working for a long time and build up slowly and steadily.

Im saying that propulsion systems are not that difficult to design and produce.
Engines for aviation is something else.

Engines for aviation is something else.
Gas turbine is also "something", which is also used on ships.
Variable speed gearboxes which combines diesel engines and gas turbines are something, couplings or shaftings as well.
Or pitch controllable propeller is something.
Naval propulsion is challenging as much as aviation engines.
However, it is easier to replace parts of propulsion systems on a ship with minor modifications when needed.
Instead of developing old school codag cogag propulsions for large shipsr we can focus on integrated electric propulsion systems with electrical podded/propellers, ignoring shafting and gearboxes and focusing on large electric motors with variable pitch propellers.
Gensets would be easier to develop or easy to acquire or replace, if we ignore shafting and gearboxes. And getting rid of the shafting it will be easier to place them in the hull.
Foreseeing that, year by year electronic system aboard a ship is getting more intense, IEP will be convenient for this purpose , future proof ( for lasers- railguns) as well.
I am rather curious if they are going to develop atom like programmable munitions, or guided -ER HE artillery munitions for naval cannons?

In MKEK's 2023 Vision, the Goal is to Nationalize the 127mm Naval Gun after 76mm!

The most prominent feature in this project is the 76mm gun's hybrid control capability in terms of both servo and hydraulics, transforming the system from an analog structure to a fully digital one. In this way, it is possible to integrate, control and track the cannon system with the digital-based new generation GENESIS and ADVENT SYS. MKEK General Manager Yasin AKDERE says, "We have implemented a product that is very different from the examples in the world."

In addition to the indigenization of cannon systems, studies on smart guided ammunitions to be used in these systems continue.

Italy sells its equivalent otomalera 76mm naval gun for €8.2 million with a delivery time of 24 months. When Turkey was exposed to EU-based unfair embargoes and deliberate delays, it had to develop this system on its own.

In the project under the coordination of SSB, development from scratch was completed in 12 months and the system will be put into service 2022 first quarter. Navy purchase cost $4.7 million per unit. Since the system is domestically produced, it will have delivery-time advantage too.

In other words, we thank the narrow-vission EU bureaucrats from here, again.

As I wrote above, the work of the 127mm gun continues. This means that another NATO standard naval gun manufacturer will enter the market, whose cost advantage will be the most competitive.

Has there been a change in the management of MKEK? The company was famous for constantly falling short in a variety of programs. Seems like a wind of change is blowing?

The MKE 76/62mm Naval Gun is a very special project.

The fact that the system will be put into service at the end of 2022 symbolizes a great institutional change that most of us still cannot believe, considering MKEK's past record as a state economic enterprise (SOE). The institutional coordination developed with Roketsan and SAGE has also started to yield results, which cannot be ignored.

Under the National Naval Gun Project, with the support of solution partners ANZATSAN, ERMAKSAN and İĞREK Makina, the First Firing Test with a 76/62mm Gun consisting of approximately 16.800 pieces was carried out on November 2021. So they managed to carry out the project with an incredibly fast project schedule.

The 76/62mm National Naval Gun has an effective range of over 16 kilometers and can fire 80 shots per minute with 5 different shooting modes. MKE also develops different types of domestic ammunitions for the 76/62mm National Naval Gun.

Two of them stand out:
>76/62mm particle/air-burst and smart ammunition developments continues,
>The work on GPS and laser guided projectiles has reached the final stage.

Different munition models such as HE-PD, HE-VT and HE-IR in the inventory will also be used by the MKE Naval Gun.

Thanks to a completely digital infrastructure in terms of fire-control and automation, it has a system design that is fully compatible with GENESIS and ADVENT. The Naval Gun can be directed to sea and land targets by the consoles of the ship, as well as working as one of the air defense layers.

The 76/62 Compact Naval Gun is used on 32 different surface platforms in the navy service, and many another project was designed over this caliber as the main gun. Even the need of the Turkish navy alone is big enough to finance the project. Moreover, as confirmed by many sources, studies on the 127mm naval gun have also been started.

A few years of hesitation in Italy and political interference in OtoMalera's activities led to a direct competitor in the market. We will see many similar examples soon.
