Mikhail Gorbachev passes away

He was a great leader indeed. Rip.
What a pity he had to witness the betrayal of the West in old age.

oh noes! it's so easy for a radio active isotope to 'accidentally' fall into your porridge, poor Gorby.
I am partially sympathetic to Gorbachev in the sense that he was caught between the proverbial Rock and a Hard Place. In my opinion, both Rock and Hard Place were economics, not military.

Gorbachev, in 'A Time For Peace' and speaking with the Brits, said:

The achievements of the Soviet Union in fundamental and applied sciences have won recognition around the world. Today the USSR is capable of independently tackling the most complex scientific and technological tasks.

No one disputes that. We know the flow is: Theoretical => Applied => Economics.

Most Second World countries are fully capable of the first two, but the last is purely political, as in the freedom and will to make that scientific success into an economic contributor, then let the market decide if that contributor live or die. Am Air Force and I read plenty of theoretical aeronautics from the SU and definitely we learned much from the Soviets on that front. But consistently, internal ideological paranoia outweighs economic decision making and one scientific achievement after another languished on the shelves. I read this quasi-memoir several times over the decades. The SU had nowhere else to go and Gorbachev understood that and in 'A Time For Peace' he tried to make a good face for the SU but I believe that when Gorbachev came into prominence, the SU was just one theoretical meter away from an economic precipice, and Gorbachev knew it. I do not believe Gorbachev was 'The One' who pushed/pulled the SU over that precipice. If the economy is an automobile, the SU version had a locked steering column and Gorbachev just happened to be in front of the cabin.

A well meaning man, but a weak leader.

R.I.P Gorby, lets hope he didn't accidentally fall out of a hospital window.

Actually, a certain substance 'accidentally' fell into his meal.

Oh dear! another influential Russian, the Chairman of Lukeoil no less "accidentally" falls out of a hospital window today.

y'all be careful when you visit a hospital.

Why not just be blatant about it? Does the FSB not understand that by now, these 'accidents' are pointless?

Gorby's passing signals the beginning of the Second Cold War. This time between China and its vassals versus America and its vassals.
