Communications Minister Obaidul Quader says the foundation stone of the Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project, popularly known as Metro Rail Project, will be laid on July 15.

The minister spoke about the development after a meeting at the Nagar Bhaban on Sunday to review the progress of first metro rail project and other major projects.

He said RAJUK allocated 41 acres of land to set up a depot of the mass transport project in Uttara. The land was handed over to Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) on Sunday.

Quader said the government got assurance from the Power Division of uninterrupted electricity supply and of environmental clearance from the Department of Environment (DoE) for the 20.1-kilometre elevated railway.

The minister said scrutiny of the proposals for appointment of consultation agency to draw the detail design of the metro rail route and supervise the construction work was underway.

A proposal was sent to the financier of the project – the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) – to appoint consultation agency for rehabilitation of those have been affected by the project.

Quader said the estimated expenditure of the project was Tk 219.85 billion – of which Tk 165.94 billion will come in project assistance and the government will provide the remaining fund.

The government on Feb 20 signed a deal with the JICA for constructing the mega structure which will be implemented in three phases.

In the first phase, 11 km of railway tracks will be laid from Pallabi to Sonargaon Hotel by 2019; in the second phase, 4.4-km line will be installed from Sonargaon Hotel to Bangladesh Bank at Motijheel by 2020; and in the third phase, 4.7-km tracks from Uttara to Pallabi will be laid by 2022.

Once implemented, 60,000 passengers can travel from Uttara’s Beri Bandh (Abdullahpur) to Bangladesh Bank’s head office at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel within an hour without facing any traffic jam, according to the government sources.

As far as I heard, the JICA survey team proposed a combination of rail road 1) on the Ground+ Level, 2) on the elevated structure, and 3) under the ground when needed. Now Minister Obaidul Quader is talking about the entire 20.1 km rail to be placed on the elevated structures.

This is new to me. I have personal liking for Obaidul Quader. He is one of those AL leaders who is honest, and do not talk politics, but work hard. I hope the metro construction project will make a real start before the next election, and it will not be limited to ribbon cutting only.

SHORKARER AR DOSH KI?stupid nation is happy with stupid idea.padma bridge is gone.by doing this ppl will be more dependent on Dhaka .we need infrastructure s and distribution of power throughout BD.not make lives so easy in Dhaka that only one city remains in BD.if the same amount of money can be spent on dhaka-chittagong high way,or dhaka-sylhet highway,or dhaka-khulna high way.life would be more easier and beneficial for our country and ppl.

Isn't Dhaka-Chittagong highway going through repairs and new lanes? anyway still, we need to load off the people to other cities as well or else Chittagong will face the same fate as Dhaka in the coming decade

Btw anyone can guess the name that might be given to this metro line? :D starts with B by the way

Niceeeeeeeee, a move in the right direction. Mass rapid transit is the need of the day for our countries.
