Maratha regiment continues to lure foreign armies for training - The Times of India
~
BELGAUM: The joint military training exercises between theIndian Army and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) have begun at the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre. The training that began on November 12 is aimed at enhancing military ties between the two nations. The training is named as 'EKUVERIN-2012'.
~
Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Training Centre, which is well known for its training centres across the world, is attractive for its infrastructural facilities. Most of the foreign armies prefer this training centre because ofits facilities and uniqueness. A total of 45 army personnel from India and equal number from Maldives are taking part in the joint training exercise.
~
The bilateral annual exercisescommenced in 2009 and are held alternately in India and Maldives. The aim of the exercise is to enhance the close military co-operation between both the countries.
~
During the joint training, the army personnel will undergo round the clock training. Apart from drills, they will undergo counter insurgency operation training. According to officials, the jungle camp at the training centre gives the actual feeling for the army personnel. The training will conclude on November 25.
~
"The centre is attractive because of its facilities here. We have jungle lane shooting which gives the actual feeling for the army personnel. The infrastructure is also good in MLIRC that is why many foreignacountries prefer this training centre" added MLIRC Commandant Santosh Kurup.

The regimental centre here is carrying out its task of providing training to recruits in the use of small arms - rifle, carbine, LMG- which are basic arms of the infantry. It has requisite administrative and training facilities including modified firing range, battle area, grenade firing area, demo area, jungle lane shooting and exercise area. Every year nearly 1,000 soldiers are trained from this centre.

"The Maratha Light Infantry (MLI; also the Ganpats) is an elite regiment of the Indian Army. It was formed as the 103rd Maharattas in 1768, making it the most senior light infantry regiment of the Army.

The class composition of the regiment is primarily formed by hardy, frugal and disciplined people from the former Maratha Empire. The men are drawn from the state of Maharashtra with small percentage from Marathi speaking areas of Karnataka including Coorg :-)woot:no marathi speaking people in Coorg).Their regimental centre has been Belgaum, Karnataka, since 1922 , which was part of the undivided Bombay state at that time"

Er,,,let the politicians dispute & sort it out. I think it's a bit silly The Mahajan report clearly supported Belgaum's inclusion in Karnataka as also the bifurcation of the Kasargod district in Kerala & merging it with Karnataka. Inspite of that decision not being implemented & Kasargod actually being the birthplace for the movement for formation of Karnataka, no one goes so crazy about that in Karnataka like the politicians of Maharashtra do.

A bit stupid to behave as if two neighbouring Indian states are enemy countries.

we must send our maratha regiment to liberate Belgaum from the occupation of evil kannadigas :P

You didn't read ??.....:) they are headquartered in Karnataka.....

To be fair, Karnataka also claims some part of Andhra (dont know exactly which) and Hogenakkal in TN.

If KA wants Mahajan committe report, then it should drop the demand on Hogenakkal too. There cant be two ways about that.
