ISLAMABAD: The Senate on Tuesday expressed grave concern over the law and order situation in Karachi and sought a report from Interior Minister Rehman Malik on the issue.
The senators were of the view that anti-state elements were hatching conspiracies to disrupt peace in the provincial capital as well as to derail the countrys economy by creating panic in Pakistans economic hub.
Senator Safdar Abbasi on a point of order raised the issue of sectarian violence in Karachis Lyari area and said Rehman Malik should take the House into confidence regarding the situation.
Deputy Chairman Senate Jan Jamali also expressed apprehension over the situation and said that the incidents of target killing were of serious concern.
ANP leader Zahid Khan said innocent people were being killed in Karachi and there was no writ of the government in the provincial capital.
He said the Interior Minister should apprise the House about the steps taken so far.
Salim Saifullah said the government must tell who was behind these acts of violence.
Professor Khurshid said the incidents of violence were part of a conspiracy to disturb the peace of Karachi.
Adviser to Prime Minister Raza Rabbani said the series of incidents of violence were part of an organised conspiracy to make the country a market of multi-national companies.
When we were in opposition we opposed the privatisation of KESC, but it was privatised and then Karachi was plunged into darkness, Rabbani said, adding that load-shedding had paralysed Karachis industries.
He said the sectarian violence was aimed at destabilising Sindh politically and economically and that would ultimately affect the country's economy.
