Before the tenure of the current provincial government ends, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government will launch various projects in the hydro power sector. They will be completed by June, 2018.

While addressing a dinner hosted by Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization (PEDO), KP Minister for Energy, Muhammad Atif, stated that these projects combined will produce over 1200 MW of electricity.

“Out of 1200 MW power projects, six projects of 668 MW had recently been advertised to attract private sector investment, and for this, 56 private companies applied while 32 companies had been shortlisted to award the projects by February 10,” he said.

The Chief Executive Officer of PEDO, Akbar Ayub Khan, added that a huge investment is required if these projects are to be carried out. He said that an investment of $12 billion is required for projects of 3900 MW, which have been identified by the government.

“So far we have received overwhelming response from local and foreign investors to start the projects”, he added.

Akbar Ayub also stated that private sector has been very generous in terms of offering their support. He said various projects of 668 MW out of the total 1200 MW have been initiated by the private sector whereas rest of the projects will be started under the supervision of public sector.

The projects under construction were also discussed at the event and Mr. Akbar revealed that power projects of 214 MW are on various stages of the construction.

Imran Khan, Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI), also spoke at the event. He said that the potential is immense in the province and it is capable of producing over 40,000 MW of clean and cheap hydro energy.

Other prominent PTI leaders including Jehangir Khan Tareen and Asad Umar also spoke at the event.
