The three top officials in Afghanistan's Kandahar province were killed when their own guards opened fire on them at a security conference on Thursday, the deputy provincial governor said, however, a Taliban spokesman said the target was Washington's top general in Afghanistan, General Scott Miller, who escaped without injury, according to Nato.

Kandahar's deputy provincial governor Agha Lala Dastageri said powerful provincial police chief Abdul Razik and the province's intelligence chief Abdul Mohmin died immediately in the attack, while provincial governor Zalmay Wesa died later of his injuries at a hospital.

A Taliban spokesman who claimed responsibility for the attack told The Associated Press that US Gen Scott Miller, commander of US and Nato troops in Afghanistan, was the target. Nato officials say Miller escaped unharmed.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi took responsibility for the attack. He too said all three officials were killed.

The security meeting inside the sprawling provincial governor's residence was being held ahead of Saturday's parliamentary elections.

Razik was a particularly powerful figure in southern Kandahar and a close US ally despite widespread allegations of corruption. He ruled in Kandahar, the former Taliban heartland, with an iron fist and had survived several attempts to kill him, including one last year that resulted in the death of five diplomats from the United Arab Emirates.

Security has been steadily deteriorating in Afghanistan with increasingly brazen attacks being carried out by insurgents and Afghanistan's security forces have been on high alert ahead of Saturday's elections.

The Taliban have threatened the polls and warned teachers and students not to participate in the vote and not to allow schools to be used as polling centres. The insurgents said in a statement on Wednesday that they will target Saturday's elections, which they view as illegitimate, but that they do not want to harm civilians.

The Pakistan government has condemned the brazen attack, saying "for the continuation of the democratic process in Afghanistan it was necessary for peace to prevail in the country".

The military spokesperson Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor also tweeted a statement of condemnation on behalf of Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Bajwa which expressed a desire to see security forces bring an end to "this prolonged violence in Afghanistan".

The army chief assured support in all initiatives towards that end.

Couple of days Back Afghan Army was saying that Gen Raziq is ISI agent appointing his brother stating:

anther game of #PunjabiArmy is coming.... #Kandahar tribal elders under supervision of ISI agent GUL AHGHA SHERZAI get together to appoint GEN. Raziq's brother as #Kandahar police chief. its very dangers its will create gap between ppl and President. professionalism is criteria
not

As Gen Raziq was close aid of Hamid Karzai, Ashraf Ghani was not happy with Gen Raziq.

But suddenly after just 2 hours gap they post Gen Raziq Hero of Afghans killed by ISI??? wtf which means ISI killed its own agent??

What is the Aftermath of the #Kandhar attack anyway?
Pakistan and USA has condemned the attack.
Inside attack also mean how much infiltrated Taliban are in ANA.

afghans will keep fighting no matter what they are uncivilized and they can not be united even on simple things that is why they are fighting since decades . do not take it serious .

A sad day for Mehamod Achakzai .......Gen Abdul Raziq Achakzai died in attack.

This is the best thing that could happen for Afghanistan. There are many more bastards who will soon meet the same fate.

Is he the same guy who is accused of killing UAE diplomats in Kandahar. the sofa blast..

What bastard ??? What he has done or was doing was exactly correct in his own rights. The Taliban had killed Gen Abdul Raziq's Father, Uncle and few family members back in 1994. I bet you, me or anyone would have done the same (given a chance) if we had to face similar situation. :agree::agree::agree:

I believe its honor killing. Bachabazi victim got revenge

Raziq, the Qandhar police chief who was killed yesterday remained a resident of Quetta for better part of his life. That city protected him from deadly Afghan war once he was a child. He earned his living as an office boy in Dist Courts.
Then later when he acquired a powerful position in Qandhar, he expressed his gratification to the city of Qta, particularly the Dist courts in his own peculiar way.
He used his intimate knowledge of the lawyers community by planning a deadly suicidal attack on them on 8th August 2016. The attack was a masterly scheme; the President Qta Bar was executed by a hitman, when the lawyers gathered outside the civil hospital in protest they were hit by a suicide bomber. 64 of the elite lawyers of Qta were eliminated in one stroke. I was an unfortunate witness to the heart wrenching scenes, where handsome, articulate, sober men in black covered in blood and mud, lying dead or dying in hospital corridors. Their helpless, grieve struck relatives wailing and sobbing. I would never be able to forget that carnage.
Raziq and his sorts are the reason why we Pakistanis are wary of Afghan refugees. While 90% of them are innocent, there is always a fear of a raziq lurking in the shades

It is not only Raziq. Most if not all Afghans are like that.

Repatriation is the only solution. Cleanse Pakistan from Afghan presence.

Don't blame Afghans....blame Pakistanis....what can you expect from Afghanistan....?....their land is occupied by Gul-Khan and Daal Khor.....blame those Pakistanis who allow these people from an anti-Pakistani state to roam freely in Pakistan....

If only more Pakistanis thought like you....many of them want those Afghans born in Pakistan to get citizenship...they think by giving them a passport will make them patriotic Pakistanis....they fail to see that bloody Pakistanis have a bloody hard time at being sincere and patriotic....me thinks they are either infected with a imported version of Western Cultural Marxism....or an unbalanced view of Islamic brother hood where your brother can stab you in the back but you have to tolerate it as "we all are brothers"....

You said it. It is our mistake when we took them in. We can only rectify it by repatriation.

Everyone needs to be shown a big middle finger whilst repatriating the Afghans. No fvcking ifs and buts. We hosted a bunch of animals and time has come for the livestock to return to its original destination. Zero fvcking sympathy with Afghan backstabbers.
