Oh none of us would really expect President Jiang to keep quiet forever in his retirement, would we?
Officials in Jiangsu provinces are holding a major ceremony to celebrate the centenary of a minor revolutionary hero named Jiang Shangqing, who happens to be the former President's uncle and foster father. Jiang wrote a poem for his foster father and it was featured prominently in the press.
I guess Jiang is telling his opponents that he can still make the headlines, 8 years into retirement and 2 years before the next government is unveiled.
Also as the head of the Shanghai Clique, Jiang's high profile display of his Princeling heritage can be seen as an open show of force from the grand Shanghai Clique-Princeling alliance.
Say what you may about his governance, Jiang has never failed to be colorful. I have the feeling Chinese politics is about to get far more interesting as the government transition comes closer and the anti-charismatic Hu stepping down.
