Japan, Pakistan’s decades’ old business partner, believes that Pakistan should open China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) for countries willing to be the part of the mega plan.

“At the moment, only Chinese and Pakistani companies can undertake projects in CPEC, if these restrictions are removed many private businesses in Japan may be interested in investing,” Toshikazu Isomura, consul general of Japan in Karachi, said in an interaction with newsmen recently. He said Japan is Pakistan’s partner since long and 82 Japanese companies were already operating in Pakistan.

“Japanese companies have invested over $500 million in the country in last three years,” Isomura said in a briefing regarding State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, Nobuo Kishi’s recent visit to Karachi.

The Japanese consul general said their state minister had meetings with Prime Minister and other functionaries and discussed issues of bilateral interest. Easing of tariff barriers on import of Pakistan’s textile and leather products in Japan was also discussed.

Talking about CEPC, Isomura said, “The project is good for Pakistan and good for the region. Pakistan should open it for its old business partners.”

Well, Japan should first compare its $500 million investments in Pakistan in the last 3 years with over $55 billion from China.. it is just not comparable, although Japan should get involved in due time, meaning in a few years from now, when at least infrastructure projects are finished..
All in all, this is an encouraging news for CPEC, if Japan (read the mighty industrial Japan) sees it as a good investment opportunity and as a good project beneficial to the whole region..It is a sign that many major world economies will also be interested to get involved in the development of Pakistan, while the lion share will obviously go to China the initiator and main financier of the project, it is just fair..

We are most welcome with this, if Japan also invest in Machine and Tools manufacturing plant (not assembly plant) with transfer of technology. We need good equipment to build these projects. Japan must take this opportunity.

Wonder if Indian companies can also invest in CPEC?

Contrary to what Nawaz Sharif says, I think CPEC should be politicised and Pakistan should only "open up" CPEC to countries with warm relations with Pakistan and cool relations with our rivals. In the case of Japan, they may have generally strong economic ties with Pakistan in certain sectors but their ties are much stronger with our rivals. Also, it is important to remember that Sino-Japanese relations are currently at a low thus Japan partaking in a project headed partly by China may impede its progress.

they only mean give us some tenders too don't just give every power plant, bridges, air ports, Dams and road project to Chinese and Pakistani companies only and buy some Japanese machinery and equipments too not just Chinese. just a silly statement from the diplomat, why doesn't Japan announce building and financing a Dam and no one will stop them.

CPEC is open for all the countries to join. Japan and all other countries that want to benefit from CPEC and trade in the region are most welcome. The govt of Pakistan should market this properly and let no doubts about this in the minds of investors and the countries.

Personally I would welcome Japan to join CPEC, this is proven that CPEC is on the right direction, CPEC or OBOR mean to be a win-win concept for all and not mean to exclude any nations as American TPP. If Japan can contribute anything to CPEC then we all should welcome it.

I don't know if Indians like to hear this  , If Japan really get involve in CPEC, other nations such South Korea and western nations will follow...Pakistan will get enough of investment to boost their economy.:pakistan:

That is the positive attitude. When it comes to trade, we should open our doors for all as long as the trade is fair and beneficial. Both China and Japan are big economies in the world and both are Asian countries so we should trade with each other and build relations through it.

Some countries are jealous and stupid so right now they are opposing it out of their animosity, arrogance and foolishness but in future, they will regret it more and more.

I think they were invited to join in by China, but they have refused because of Azad Kashmir..

Azad Kashmir is the lame excuse. indians are jealous as hell to see Pakistan progress and prosper. They want Pakistan to fail and thus sponsoring terrorism in every part of Pakistan especially Baluchistan and other locations of significance for CPEC and especially targeting Chinese workers and engineeers to send a clear signal to both Pakistan and China.

It is very naive and foolish of Pakistani govt to expect any positive gesture from its worst enemy that is against the very existence of Pakistan since day one.

It was done with the expected answer, so not to say that it wasn't invited!!
