Japanese Ambassador Iwama Kiminori has hoped that Bangladesh would play a vital role in materializing its new Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) vision announced by Prime Minister Kishida Fumio on March 20 this year.

Iwama and his wife hosted a reception at Chittagong Club Sunday to strengthen relations with Chittagong communities following a goodwill port visit by JS Uraga (Mine Sweeper Tender) and JS Awaji (Mine Sweeper Ocean) of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.

Rear Admiral Abdullah Al Mamun Chowdhury, commander of Chittagong naval area, Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman, commander of Bangladesh Navy Fleet, Mahbubul Alam, president of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Captain Nakai Eiichi, commander of Minesweeper Division One, were present.

The visit is an example of practical cooperation between Japan and Bangladesh to realize the FOIP for ensuring a rule-based international order to bring stability and prosperity for every country as well as to secure peace and prosperity in the region, he said.

In the new plan, four pillars of cooperation for the FOIP were launched – "principles for peace and rules for prosperity," "addressing challenges in an Indo-Pacific way," "multi-layered connectivity," and "extending efforts for security and safe use of the sea to the air."

Japan focuses on the "development of an industrial value chain connecting the Bay of Bengal and northeastern India" as a concrete example of multi-layered connectivity, the envoy said.

Also, he emphasized strengthening connectivity in the Bay of Bengal region, including Chittagong and called the port visit the fourth pillar of practical cooperation for realizing the FOIP.

Bangladesh and Japan started a new voyage towards the next 50 years of bilateral ties this year following celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations last year, Iwama said.

Please do not also forget that two Japanese naval ships are now in BD for a 3-day visit.

Japan's new security strategy calls for using infrastructure loans/investments for strategic purposes. Won't be those rosy harmless soft loans anymore.

But, should we expect free or cheap lunch all the time after 52 years have passed since 1971? A rising country gradually learns to take responsibility for affairs related to its security.

Spoon feeding is no long-term solution. Disliked and criticized by other countries, and is not respected.

Bangladesh is perhaps the most insignificant country ever

bangladesh, niger, zambia, zaire, south sudan...

apart from the Indian heroics in 71, BD doesn't figure anywhere

Considering potential Chinese naval activity from a nearby naval port in Myanmar, it’s not surprising

Probably looking to fund Bangladesh development that directs it in a way that supports a Quad-oriented logistics; Japanese owned infrastructure used to transport Indian forces to Aranachal pradesh.

But Japan thinks without BD cooperation Indian NE remains insignificant water land to be taken away by China.

It would be wiser for India to move its NE to the west of BD so as China cannot take over the NE. Should not Indians kowtow to us because BD plays savior of Indian integrity.

"Realizing" Indo-Pacific vision as Japan propose here, is against Bangladesh national interest.
This is a geopolitical fact. Anyone who tries to tell anything else is a liar.
Especially that indian false flagger who pretends to be a bangladeshi expatriate from Japan.

What quacks like a duck and looks like a duck, is probably a duck.

When a member regularly:
- post anti-Chinese comments
- is staunch pro Japan
- is pro American
- ridicules muslims
- ridicules islam

Put 2 and 2 together and you have answer.

This is one of the chief problems with defence.pk, where false-flaggers from a certain country is allowed to infuence the discourse

True, and now the debt-trap risks would also apply to the Japanese loans.
