All exported F-35s are downgraded. Exported F-35s have an RCS (radar cross section) of a beach ball on radar.

Only AMERICAN F-35s are not downgraded and their RCS is the size of a marble.

Japan has spent a fortune to buy 42 DOWNGRADED F-35s. I don't know why they bothered. Downgraded F-35s are easily detected on radar and shot down.

Australia, Canada, and Japan are buying the same downgraded beach-ball RCS F-35s.

Japan just deployed its first downgraded F-35 and no one cares. It's a sitting duck for China's J-20 stealth fighter.

Japan's first operational F-35 gets deployed amid rising threat from China | Business Insider (February 2, 2018)
"Just before the end of January, the Japanese Air Self Defense Force (JASDF) announced that it had deployed its first operational F-35 at Misawa Air Base.
...
The F-35 will be the most advanced fighter jet in the JASDF arsenal. Nine more F-35s are planned to be deployed by the end of the 2018 fiscal year.

In all, Japan intends to field at least 42 F-35s over the next few years. The first four F-35s were made in the US, and the remaining 38 will be assembled by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan."

Not so stealthy: the $15b fighters | The Sydney Morning Herald (March 14, 2006)

"A crucial aspect of the fighter's 'stealth capability' - radio frequency signatures - has been downgraded from 'very low observable' to 'low observable', according to the US Defence Department website.

Peter Goon, a former RAAF flight test engineer, said that would mean the difference between it appearing as a 'marble and a beach ball' on enemy radar.
...
Signs that the stealth capability had been lowered first emerged last year, when key performance indicators on the US Defence Department Joint Strike Fighter website changed. The manufacturer of the aircraft, Lockheed Martin, insisted repeatedly to the Herald that the reported shift was an error. Australia's Defence Department also maintained there had been no change.

But those assurances have proven false. When the Herald contacted the US Defence Department Joint Strike Fighter program office in Washington, a spokeswoman said the latest table on its website was correct. 'There is no reason to pull it from there,' she said.

A Lockheed Martin spokesman said yesterday: 'We will have to defer to our clients, the US Government, if that is their decision.'"

Actually Japan wil upgrade it to its standards and build its own version of it..just like they did with the F-16s and F-15s..
As for the reality of the F-35 stealth.. everything is possible..since Usrael has just asked the US to replace one of the F-35 squadrons it has ordered with the F-15I !!!

No. The Japanese F-35s have no indigenous parts. Read the article citation for February 2, 2018 in my original post.

"Despite some controversies like cost overruns and the issue that no Japanese-made parts will be in the future jets, the F-35 is seen as essential for the JASDF in countering an increasingly capable and aggressive China." (eighth paragraph)

Your last sentence contradicts the fact that they are downgraded.. why the US will provide a downgraded version to Japan if it wants it to counter China with them..

So... we still have ppl speaking about J-20 effectiveness... When it never Went in actual battle...
What a joke sometimes...

For all the big mouth out there... Wait to see a J-20 coming back from a fight with a F-35/F22 and then you can talk...same for the other side...
The performance specifications for China's J-20 and the American F-35 are both widely published. China's J-20 outclasses the American F-35 in almost every important parameter.

For example, the J-20 is designed to supercruise. The F-35 cannot.

The J-20 flies at 66,000 feet. The F-35 maxes out at 50,000 feet. This means the J-20 air-to-air missiles fly much further because it is launched from 16,000 feet higher. This gives China's J-20 a "first kill" ability against the American F-35.

The lateral acceleration of the J-20 is 9G. The lateral acceleration of the F-35 is 5G. China's J-20 is far more maneuverable than the American F-35.

The J-20 is a larger aircraft. Thus, the J-20 has a larger AESA radar (1,856 Transmit/Receive Modules) that can detect the F-35 (1,200 Transmit/Receive Modules) at a longer distance than vice versa. This gives China's J-20 a "first detection" ability against the American F-35.

The J-20 has clean lines and a smooth underside. The J-20 is stealthy. In contrast, the F-35 has bulges (e.g. large wingroot, bulge above left air-intake vent, and multiple giant bulges on its underside) that reflect radar at all different angles. The F-35 is clearly inferior to the J-20 in stealth shape.

The J-20 has a combat radius of 1,200 miles. The F-35 has a combat radius of only 500 to 700 miles (depending on the variant). China's J-20 has plenty of time to loiter over the battlefield. In contrast, the F-35 has very little time to loiter before it runs out of fuel.

The J-20 has two engines. This allows the J-20 to accelerate faster. Also, the J-20 can fly home when one of the engines fail. In contrast, the F-35 has only one engine. This means the F-35 accelerates much slower and will drop into the ocean if one engine fails. Once again, the F-35 is an inferior design. The naval US F-14 Tomcat had two engines for a reason.

Pretty sure Japanese F35s are just a stop gap. They will make their own aircraft in future.

Becos US are delusion thinking China military hardware are utterly useless. They think a downgraded F-35 is enough to challenges PLAAF. There is no contradiction in his statement. US has many times underestimate China capability. Like Gates bragging about how a China 5th gen fighter will not appear until 2020...

It’s more like you cant accept US sell monkey version hardware.

Like I said..;when it's combat proven...and won agaisnt F35 or a F-22.. AND vice versa... you can scream everywhere about it... till then... keep your horses down...
FYI... aircraft is not about Altitude or supercruise... it's a full package... (AESA/Counter/Missiles /Support etc...)

It is a FACT that exported F-35s are downgraded. You can read the report from the Canadian government for yourself (see documents below).

Stealth rankings:

1. F-22: 0.0001 m2 RCS (from GlobalSecurity)
["size of marble" on radar]

2. J-20: 0.0001 m2 (frontal) to 0.005 m2 (rear) (from Australia Air Power)
[intermediate size between marble and golf ball]

3. F-35: 0.005 m2 (from GlobalSecurity)
["size of golf ball"]

4. Exported F-35: 0.15 m2 (see citation below)
["size of beach ball"]

5. T-50/Pak Fa: 0.5 m2 (from official Russian Embassy in India website)
[size of a gigantic beach ball]
----------

"Export model F-35 is revealed to have a frontal RCS rating in 0.1~0.25 m2 (Hence the LO rating) class thanks to Canada's Defense Ministry disclosure."

"F-35 has a 95% RCS reduction over 4th-gen jets according to Julian Fantino, the vice defense minister of Canada. Going by the standard RCS of a generic 4th gen fighter used by radar vendors (5 m2), that would be 0.25 m2. If he was going by CF-18's RCS of 3 m2, then it would be 0.15 m2."

Why such a clown like you is everywhere? J-20, F22 or F35, none of them are of your business. Are there any F-35/F-22 in your poor nation Tunisia? If not, then get out of here. Just look at the mirror to see what you are like, before coming here to troll.

triggered?
it's Japan and F-35 related... not J-20 or China... so... ???
J-20 was spoken about another member not me...

Have fun...

Like how F-22 proven in what similar aerial combat? Bombing some stone man?

He's saying you're an idiot, because the F-22, F-35, and J-20 have never engaged another stealth fighter in combat.

All three are equally unproven against other stealth fighters.

You only criticize China's J-20 for not having fought another stealth fighter. Neither has the F-22 or F-35.

Thus, we can only compare the fighters based on their published specifications.
