It’s time for the United States to let Afghanistan go

"""There are alot of decisions that you made previously that are coming back to haunt you .""

My bad. ;)

BTW curious, do you know what is the story behind the "Gul Khan" phenomena in Pakistan?

Afghan governments right till 79 chose to destabilise Pakistan through alot of things . Pashtunistan , balochistan , Instigating rebellion in FATA , Khad was given tasks to break up the country . It was in the 70's during bhutto's time that Pakistan decided to keep Afghanistan under its influence through various ways . If you look at history from 79 -2016 one way or another Pakistan has had alot of influence on your politics , decision making and national psyche . Project Taliban came into being in 90's by general naseer ullah babar and that was the last nail in the coffin for an Afghanistan that wanted to be free from Pakistan . If Pakistan had done the same to China back in the 60's and 70's do you honestly think they would have given us $51 billion now ?

Gul Khan phenomenon? No. I do know about Arshad khan The chai walla that is making rounds all over the internet and girls going gaga over him :D

the lady is as delusional as one can get . She talks of bacha khan and pushtunwali . I believe in neither . Bacha khan was not in favour of Pakistan and nobody cares about him in Pakistan including the Pashtuns . As for caring for Pashtunwali its an ancient code that has nothing to do with 21st century. Pashtuns in Pakistan are some of the most educated people in the country . KPK is progressing very fast thanks to the political awakening and mental maturity .

http://tribune.com.pk/story/1082910/k-p-improves-on-key-educational-indicators/

K-P is well ahead of all four provinces, ICT and other regions, showing high improvement in Gross Intake Rate (GIR). This indicator relates to a number of new entrants in the first grade of primary education, regardless of age, expressed as a percentage of the population at the official primary school entrance age. The GIR of K-P in 2014-15 is 135 per cent compared to the 128 per cent of ICT and the 116 per cent and 111 percent of Punjab and Pakistan, respectively. The rest of the provinces and regions have recorded a lower GIR.

It is pertinent to note that after ICT, K-P’s girls’ GIR (120 per cent) remained well above others, such as Punjab’s 113 per cent, Gilgit Baltistan’s 108 per cent, the national average of Pakistan (104 per cent) and the rest of the provinces/regions. The GIR has improved over the last two years. Relative to the current year GIR of 135 per cent, it was 119.3 per cent in the year 2013-14 and 119.55 per cent in the year 2012-13.

Another important indicator is Gross Enrolment Rate (GER), which is the total enrolment for a particular education level (primary or secondary), regardless of age, expressed as a percentage of the eligible official school-age population of that particular education level, in a given school-year.

Followed by ICT (123 per cent), K-P is, again, higher on this indicator (110 per cent) than Punjab (95 per cent) and the national average of Pakistan (91 per cent). While other regions and provinces have an even lower GER. It is encouraging to note that following the ICT, the highest girls’ GER (93 per cent) is in K-P as compared with 92 per cent in Punjab and 83 per cent as the national average of Pakistan. The GER trend in K-P has improved over time as well. In relation to the 2014-15 GER of 110 per cent, it was 104 per cent in the year 2013-14 and 83 per cent in the year-2012-13.

So you are gul khan then :D no offense meant.

As for Bacha Khan, it is naive to disregard a leader that is not only known in Pakistan but world renowned. He is a gandhi equivalent of Pakhtoons but alas you are disregarding him because of some developments in some indexes ? Why should the appreciation of him being mutually exclusive to some quote-unquote indicators.

There is another term also "Gul Marjan ". :-) Hope you know about it also.

Maybe for ANP or Pashtoons of Afghanistan but here I dont even think he is relevant . Rehman baba or Khushal Khan khattak are much more revered here.

Bacha khan was against the creation of Pakistan and chose not to be buried here . Any leader that holds such views is dead to me .

Article here, excerpts below:

Recently a group of former U.S. officials and experts issued a proposalfor an "enduring partnership" with Afghanistan, calling the nation "a key front in a generational conflict against violent extremists across the greater Middle East." The group, which included Generals Stanley McChrystal and David Petraeus, both former commanders of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, argued that in addition to preventing Afghanistan from again becoming a sanctuary for terrorist organizations, a long-term American presence is critical to ensure stability in the region and as a base of operations to conduct operations against other adversaries in the war on terror.

It is understandable that officials whose professional careers are so closely connected with the current U.S. strategy would find it difficult to admit failure, but the truth is there is no good reason to stay in Afghanistan.

If the Afghan army stays intact with heavy weapons American air power can keep Afghanistan regime in power

That is why as Afghans must get smart and play this game in a way that also has our interests covered, instead of being at the receiving end. Have you studied how Sweden played both sides in WW2?

Not sure we "played" the sides.

I think we tried to avoid war, and ants better keep aside while elephants dance.
Beeing surrounded on all sides by German Forces, right after they defeated France and Great Britain,
it takes a great deal of stupidity to provoke an attack.

Denying transits or stopping shipments from the iron mines was going to result in an invasion.
Once Germany grew weaker the freedom in making decisions increased.

Sweden was divided at the time with the officercorps and the nobility siding for Germany
at least initially due to long relations.
As news of terror and massacres became available, opinion started to swing.

In any case you guys played your cards in such a away to that ensured that Sweden was not invaded which itself shows maturity.

Afghans can use our location to our advantage if we play our cards right, there is also massive goodwill in the international community vis-a-vis Afghanistan not interested in seeing Afghanistan fail. Ashraf Ghani has the foresight and the right leader to pull this off

I think Ashraf Ghani and co did a good job in Brussels conference by attracting strong commitment until 2020, we will get our shit together by then, the Talis have done their best this year and failed.

I liked how Ashraf Ghani summarized it in Brussels, that with so many conflicts ongoing around the world , the world is still showing massive commitment towards Afghanistan and tha shows that we have done our homework this time and have started to play the cards a little better now.

This is proof that your knowledge of Pakistan is zilch. Who gives a flying hoot about Bacha Khan. The cockroach was against the creation of Pakistan. Thank God the brave patriotic pashtuns rejected his call. Now instead of poking your nose into Pakistan, please fix your own house:) I guess you have nothing better to do, since your own country is ruined.

The amount of corruption done by the ANP in KPK was extraordinary. Personally, I don't support any political party in Pakistan, however, the reforms pushed forward by the PTI Government has had a positive effect. But their are some incompetent people who are working in the investment cell of KPK. @A-Team is selective in discussing issues. He never responds back to a topic that makes him feel uncomfortable.

Last time I checked it is the Afghan flag that is flying over Kunduz as speak :) in greater scheme of things this back and forth is fine with us as we have achieved a strategic goal of control all major population centers, they have the watches and we have the time as continue to rebuild institutions and millions in school.

As a resident of KP the difference for me is daylight between the two governments . have a look at this . Police in KP giving challan to his own boss for over speeding .

Afghan national giving bribe to KP police only to fall in trouble

@A-Team something afghan government should learn from KP government .

Its reforms like these that has won the hearts of people . Then there are reforms and projects in Tourism , Climate , education , Good governance etc .
