New Delhi: With plans for 60 missions over the next five years, ISRO will develop a third launchpad at its spaceport at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh to meet the growing demand.

"We are planning to have a third launchpad at Sriharikota to cater to our future missions," Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman K Radhakrishnan told PTI.

He said the new launchpad would help ISRO augment the frequency of missions, which was necessary to meet its ambitious targets.

"We plan to launch 24 missions over the next 24 months, which include our communication satellites and some foreign payloads," he said, adding that over a five year period, the space agency has plans to launch 60 missions.

The new pad could also be used for launching Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk-III) carrying heavier satellites as also by the reusable launch vehicle, India's own version of a space shuttle.

It would include construction of a new vehicle assembly building, mobile pedestals, umbilical towers, emergency exits, ground escape system, crew ingress and egress systems, safety bunkers, material handling equipment and related electrical systems.

It is also part of ISRO's plan is to develop dedicated 'Space Park' next to the space port at Sriharikota.

The new missions are necessary as there have been demands in the international market for ISRO's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle to launch foreign satellites.

As ISRO starts building a launch vehicle for its mission, a launchpad gets blocked for nearly two months till the launch of a satellite. With ISRO setting a target of 24 missions in 24 months, more launchpads become a necessity.

Besides communications satellites, ISRO also has plans to launch Chandrayaan-II, the sequel to its successful moon mission, launch a satellite to study the Sun, send a probe to Mars and undertake a human spaceflight.

On plans for developing another space port, Radhakrishnan said it was only at the stage of a feasibility study.

ISRO to build third launchpad at Sriharikota

lets isro make our country to show our power to all those haughty countries who are ahead of us and neglecting our hardworking

ISRO can build only 4 PSLV's per year, don't know how they intend to target 24 missions in next 24 months. Is it a joke???

Its not fair to put every space related installation in andhra pradesh and kerala alone.

it's not something which is done to favor some states, place close to equator & the earth revolution on it's axis is taken into account before deciding for a launch pad at a particular place. Even Israel favors launching it's satellites from Sriharikota because of its favorable location.

read this (from wikipedia):

Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR, located at Sriharikota, a spindle shaped island on the East Coast of Andhra Pradesh, adjacent to Sricity[4], a developing satellite city in the epicentre of Andhra Pradesh & Tamil Nadu, about 70 km (43 mi) north of Chennai, is the spaceport of India. This island was chosen in 1969 for setting up of a satellite launching station. Features like a good launch azimuth corridor for various missions, advantage of earth's rotation for eastward launchings, nearness to the equator, and large uninhabited area for the safety zone — all make Sriharikota Range, popularly known as 'SHAR', an ideal spaceport.

why not make space tech institute or a research facility up north ?

Even the IIST is in kerala.

Almost everyone in ISRO are from south.

No complaints please , wheeler island is for missile testing , sriharikota is for PSLV/GSLV launching as they are very near to sea and if any thing goes wrong , they can direct payload in to Bay of Bengal just like how they blasted GSLV in Dec 2010 when it went out of control . The places i mentioned are very secured locations , not on Pakistan side and they have Andaman islands as protection and its far to Bangladesh or Srilanka where our enemies can spy/attack easily .

Because southern part is peninsula and transport can be done easily if research centers are located near launch centers . Also North can be prone to attacks of Pakistan or China very easily .

ISRO do have facilities at Ahmadabad, Chandigarh, Shillong, Dehradun. IIST is in Kerala b'coz it is close to ISRO headquarters & important facilities which helps student to get accustom to ISRO. As far as people from only south are concerned, no one has stopped people from North to give ISRO entrance exams & interview, if they meet the criteria surely they would be taken.

Criteria is important mate.. If someone is qualified , who will stop them? As for facilities , they want to build near sea shore, easy for transportation !!

Congrats guys! Your progress in space is a testament to your prowess in "special" sciences.
On topic: Whats the progress with the cryogenic engine on GSLV Mark III? Last I heard from a friend who graduated (abroad) with me was that they were having trouble with stabilizing LOX+LH2 mix.

yes the cryogenic engine is giving lot of trouble to ISRO people, but GSLV launch is scheduled in sept-oct 2012 & if successful there will be first launch of mark 3 in 2013, GSLV mark 3 is of great importance to ISRO as manned space flight will take place in it. Also chandrayaan-2 mission is also scheduled for launch with a GSLV. both these programmes are postponed due to stabilization of GSLV as a trusted launcher.

+ thanks for appreciation, ISRO is one govt. organisation which every Indian is proud of.

Regarding Mark III, are you sure that Mark III will carry-out the manned flight? If I remember correctly, it was in 20-25 T class vehicle. For manned mission and support systems, don't you need a minimum of 50T+?
