TEL AVIV, Israel, June 10 (UPI) -- Israel's military leaders are expected to give the green light to buying more of Lockheed Martin's F-35 Lightning Joint Strike Fighters to equip a second squadron when they meet this month to finalize the military's procurement plan.

The contract for as many as 20 of the fifth-generation stealth fighters is "one of the key elements" in the multiyear program, known as "Oz" -- Hebrew for "strength" -- The Jerusalem Post reported Friday.

The procurement plan, which covers the weapons other military systems Israel will need for the next decade or so, will go before the government for approval once the General Staff signs off on it.

The Israelis appear to be determined to go ahead with the long-mooted deal for a second F-35 tranche despite major setbacks in Lockheed Martin's development program.

Just a small thought by a rookie, why don't we go in for the F35's in the MMRCA deal, the Americans are showing interest in TOT and it is a 5th gen fighter.

1. Too many strings attached.
2. Limited to no ToT
3. Prone to US sanctions in future.
4. Already massive orders to be supplied to other nations.
5. Still not in operational phase.
6. Cost per plane too high.
7. Other than stealth, limited capabilities.

y Israel goes for f 35 ....where it gonna serve other than giving a joy ride to its pilots....

Its same with "any" fighters.
Yeah, but this one will land in Israeli hands. How many other nations are actually in constant state of war? Thus these jets will constantly be battle-tested and upgraded accordingly.

That I agree, There are better Jets out there , but in Israel's neighbourhood, this is going to be the beast ..

Buying f-35 for Israel makes sense , because it is one of the best fighters out there and also it cements their already strong relationship with the US which they need , considering how many countries in the world hate them .

F-35 is for sale and any friend country can buy them. The problem is producing them now.

the F-35 isn't a pure fighter in the sense that it is designed only for air dominance it won't out maneuver a Rafale. And the tactics it uses when going against other fighters will reflect that. It relies on it's, stealth, superior electronics, radar, and electronic warfare ability to counter it's limitations. Enemy fighters will have trouble seeing and locking onto it. if an enemy fighter survives the BVR engagement. Then they still have to contend with it's radar being rendered useless (jammed) and an f-35 with a 360 degree missile lock on ability.
