Israel launches new military spy satellite
ISRAEL - 22 JUNE 2010

Israel's Defense Ministry says it has launched a military satellite called "Ofek 9," the latest in a series of spy satellites.

The Defense Ministry says the satellite was launched on Tuesday evening. It says the satellite was sent skyward from the Palmachim air force base on Israel's coast south of Tel Aviv.

The statement said technical crews were examining the data.

Defense officials said Ofek 9 is a spy satellite with a high resolution camera. It's to join two other active spy satellites.

Israel is known to direct satellites over Iran to keep track of its nuclear program.

The officials said the three satellites would give Israel considerable coverage of sensitive areas. They spoke on condition of anonymity because details were not made public.

Israel's "Ofeq 9" satellite was launched and successfully injected into orbit
ISRAEL - 22 JUNE 2010

The following announcement was issued by Israel's Ministry of Defence spokesman on June 22nd, 2010:

"Today 06.22.2010 at 22:00 hrs, Israel's "Ofeq 9" satellite was launched and successfully injected into orbit by means of a "Shavit" satellite launcher.

In the next phase, the satellite will undergo several tests for validation of its serviceability and satisfactory performance.

"Ofeq-9" is an advanced remote sensing satellite.

Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd (IAI) developed and produced the satellite in response to an order placed by the IMOD, in cooperation with various other local industrial companies, including: El-Op, IMI, Rafael, Tadiran-Spectralink, Elisra and others.

The launch was conducted from the Israel Air Force test range."

'Ofeq 9' Has Successfully Transmitted Its 1st Images
ISRAEL - 28 JUNE 2010

Itzhak Nissan, President and CEO of Israel Aerospace Industries: "A flawless technological achievement that will improve the Israel Defense Forces' operational capabilities."

(June 28, 2010) -- On Friday, June 25th, approximately 70 hours after the successful launch of the observation satellite "Ofeq 9", the satellite began to transmit its first images to the ground station. The very high-resolution images are a clear indication that all the satellite's systems are operating successfully and that the "Ofeq 9" has joined the rest of the observation satellites that are currently serving the state of Israel. Israel Aerospace Industries' (IAI) observation satellites include optical satellites ("Ofeq 5", which was launched in 2002, and "Ofeq 7", launched in 2007), as well as the imaging radar satellite TecSAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) which provides high-resolution radar images, under all weather conditions, day or night.

"Ofeq 9" was launched on Tuesday, June 22nd, at 22:00PM from the Palmahim Israel Air Force base from a "Shavit" launcher produced by IAI. The satellite was successfully injected into orbit, and in the following days, completed a series of pre-programmed tests, all of them successful. These tests ensured that the satellite's systems were operating as planned.

Itzhak Nissan, President and CEO of IAI, said: "In addition to the successful, precise launch of the satellite, we now know that all its systems are operating normally, and both these facts reflect IAI's impressive technological and operational capabilities." Nissan added that this technological achievement owes its success to the employees of IAI, the prime contractor of the project, and to all the people who were involved along the way, from the Israel defense system, the IDF, and the other defense industries that took part in this successful project.

Following the launch, on June 23rd 2010, Israel's President Mr. Shimon Peres praised IAI's employees: "The launching of the "Ofeq 9" will give the state of Israel a significant, qualitative edge, and will help provide information from all over the world. Congratulations to the impressive team. You have proven, once again, that Israel Aerospace Industries is at the forefront of the global industry."

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Multi Sensor System Revolutionizes Satellite Control
ISRAEL - 5 AUGUST 2010

Elbit Systems Ltd’s new Multi Sensor changes how the Intelligence Corps controls satellites in Israel from a manual process to an automated one, and is in its final operational testing phase

The Ofek 9, which was launched into space last month, joined the 6 other satellites operated by the IDF. Over the years, the different IDF units which handle photography and satellite imagery analysis have received more and more satellites and missions. In order to organize the space industry, the Multi Sensor system was called to the forefront. This system is expected to control the various satellites and their missions and demands.

“The basic idea of the system is that the personnel who need photos, will relay a request to the system, which will then program the direction of the satellite at the right time according to its location and the weather at the requested location for optimal coverage of the target,” explains Danny, the manager of Intelligence Infrastructure of Elbit Systems Ltd. “Until now, it took long periods of time for soldiers to operate the 8 satellites controlled by the IDF, and the manual operators in the unit responsible for the satellites found it difficult to deal with the tens of thousands of requests and to manage the requests based on priority level.”

“The Right Satellite, At the Right Time, At the Right Place”

Although transition to the new system has not been seamless, soldiers in the Intelligence Corps unit that first received the Multi Sensor system say they objected to it when it first arrives, because they thought that there was no substitute for manual work in yielding better results, which they realized afterwards was a mistake. After a rigorous training period, the soldiers understood that the system improved their operations and their attitude towards the system changed.

“We sat with the commander of the unit, and he was quite impressed with the system’s operations and said it was ‘amazing.’ The operators were also impressed and admit that today their operations are better,” adds one of the system’s developers, who arrives once a week to the unit to add improvements before its official deployment in the near future.

“The Multi Sensor knows how to determine which satellite is coming from which direction, and it can factor into these determinations different filming conditions such as the weather and visibility. Accordingly, the system knows how to aim the satellite properly at the right place and the right time,” adds the operator.”There are dozens of parameters which need to be taken into account, and which are difficult for a human operator to contend with. The system does it for him. Within four hours, the system can set an optimal photography schedule for every satellite controlled by the IDF. On the other hand, a manual operator takes seven hours to program a photography schedule for one satellite.”

In the coming months, parallel to the launching of the Multi Sensor, the Ofek 9 satellite will finish its operational testing phase and will also be deployed to full service. Multi Sensor’s developers say this in not daunting. “We developed the system at the highest level possible, and it is built to work with additional satellites in the future. In a matter of months, we can add any new satellites, including the Ofek 9, into the system.”
