But last year the Sultan introduced Sharia Law - where thieves would have their hands cut off and adulterers and homoseexuals would be stoned to death. It applies to everyone living in Brunei except the Sultan and his Royal family.

While parts of the ancient Islamic law have been introduced in stages, Brunei is now on the verge of adopting public stoning.

What they found, she explained, was a beautiful but repressed country where its citizens never criticise the royal family – mainly because it's a crime – and seem to be unaware of the Sultan and his playboy brother, Prince Jefri’s debauchery.

Both brothers have a reputation for indulging in beautiful women.

Vanity Fair dubbed them the “constant companions in hedonism” in 2011 for their lavish lifestyles and penchant for collecting women like children collect toys.

And Prince Jefri is on the outer, accused of siphoning $19.2 billion (AUS) from the country’s coffers.
According to Jillian Lauren, the American woman who spoke to 60 Minutes about her year in Prince Jefri and the Sultan’s harem, the pair indulged a lot – and they didn’t care how old the girls were.

“She (Lauren) was in the harem when she was 18 and when she was there there were between 30 to 40 other girls, some as young as 15,” Ms Langdon said. “She spent a year there. She received hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of gifts, jewerlly and clothing. She was very well looked after but that’s because she caught the eye of the Sultan’s younger brother Prince Jefri.

“She was his play thing. They had seex hundreds of times and then Prince Jefri gave her as a gift to the Sultan and she goes into great detail (about) the sexual activity she got up to with the sultan.”

Well, as a Muslim we can say that only under a prophet leadership, adding with four leadership under Abu Bakr/ Umar / Ustman/ Ali that Islam rule is really used. Even under Umar leadership, one of his son get punishment that cost his son life as a consequence. After that democratic period where leaders were chosen, kingdom leadership were flourishing through out Muslim world. Some are good and many are not good. One famous hadith has already said that beside the leadership of the prophet, only the first 4 who are just, and after that the last one near the end time. Nevertheless Muslim world is also producing many great leaders like Saladin (non-Arab)

If Sultan Brunei makes mistake so the consequence will be very hard in the eyes of God. No need to feel jealous. At least they have a stable country, there is no war at all in Brunei.

Prince Jefri of Brunei wants sex statues of himself barred from NY courtroom | Daily Mail Online

The kinky, narcissistic spending of a flamboyant prince has been revealed in a New York courtroom.
This week the younger brother of the Sultan of Brunei fought to keep photos of the almost $1million (£617,000) pornographic statues depicting himself in various sexual positions with a fiancee away from jurors in his upcoming civil trial against former advisers.

Prince Prince Jefri Bolkiah, 56, immortalized his bedroom antics with Micha Raines in life-sized bronze sculptures he had commissioned for his Long Island estate Sunninghill.

No one is better than the family of Brunei Sultan who keep asking people to be good Muslims meanwhile having lots of "vitality". Opps... I am wrong. The Al Saud family may win the "vitality" + Pious championship vs Brunei chap.

So what's your point? Brunei has no wars, the country has an enviable standard of living as compared to its neighbors. Definitely a lot more stable than other countries in ASEAN , yes?

Look at Timor Leste, look at Burma...

How is this post relevant? How is legal hypocrisy justified if there is high HDI?

Well, if the Saudis can adopt a conservative style of governance , then who's to say Brunei can't ? In the end, both are oil producing states, and Brunei is fairly small with a population less than 1 million. Tight control won't be a problem for Brunei.

Let's not forget the clout one has being a major oil producer....

From my viewpoint, adopting sharia law will make the Sultan of Brunei more legitimate, to prevent him from being attacked from not being not Islamic enough. Civil laws are made by man while syariah are God's law.

I think Shariah was written by man not god.

That's a good point. I would also like to add that the crime rate in Brunei is relatively low, as compared to countries in ASEAN, the instilling of Shariah Law would even reduce crime even further, definitely a deterrent for would be human traffickers , drug dealers, and sources of instability for the country. If Singapore can implement strict policies in regards to crime, then I see Brunei's decision to implement Shariah Law is no different. Again we have to remember that Brunei is relatively small, relatively homogenous (the racial make up are predominantly Malay, Dayak, Bisaya, Sama Bajau).

Law, in its own right, is a man-made civil contract.

Be it Shariah Law, Confucian Law, Roman Law, Western Law, etc --- all are man made, created for civil peace, and may have some kind of 'divine' inspiration. But in the end, are man made contracts.

Nihonjin should come up with more enlighten views.

All Sunni Islamo countries are in deep shitt unless oil gushing out behind their backyard, or they resist Islamofascism.

Without oil, Brunei is going to be a poor Afghan version 2.0.

And why Sunniland is in deep shitt. The reason is a lot of Sunniland are ruled by hereditary despot, who engage in all sorts of perversion. These pervert are the one who use Islamofascism to divert attention.

Saudi without Al Saud family in exchange with a Turkey or even Iranian style of government will give entire world less trouble.

Sunni extremism is the result of Sunni being ruled by Sultan.

Look at Iran, and why Shia are far far far more reasonable than Sunni. While Iran is a theocracy, Iran basically open all secular political office to academic elites, and ironically having more USA PHD in her cabinet than anywhere else. In all Sunni Sheikhland, all lucrative positions are divided between pervert princes and to sustain such system, Sunni elites must promote hate and murder. She must promote barbarism and must try to make her citizen as stupid as possible. An informed citizentry will send Brunei elites to guillotine tomorrow.

Prophet Mohamad and Allah are unfortunate to have someone like Sunni Sheikhland elites doing all their evangelism.

Having cognitive elites in the power structure in Shia core state ensure the Shia being more progressive and reasonable.

Despite having full support from USA and Europe, I predict Sunni is going to be loser everywhere in the world against Shia. A bunch spoiled princes is not going to win against the Iranian PHDs, never mind the amount of resources and manpower in their disposal.
