ISI agent among 3 held in MP for passing on info about Army- Hindustan Times

Three persons, including an ISI agent from Pakistan, were arrested by Madhya Pradesh Special Task force (STF) for allegedly passing on sensitive information about Indian Army, a senior officer said on Sunday.

"Mohd Imran Warsi, the ISI agent hailing from Karachi, was arrested in Bhopal on Saturday with sensitive information regarding deployment, unit details and important phone numbers of the Indian Army," Inspector General (STF) Sanjeev Singh told reporters.

On information collected from him, police arrested two others -- Iqbal and Akhtar--, who were acting as his local contacts and supplying him sensitive information, Singh said.

Imran had been passing on sensitive information through e-mail and phone to his "handlers" in Pakistan and Dubai, from where he received the funding through Western Union Money Transfer, Singh said.

Information about involvement of an Army officer in leaking information has been collected from Imran during interrogation, but the matter was being further probed, he added.

The ISI agent, who was staying in Bhopal with his wife and two children, had managed to procure a ration card, PAN card and permanent resident certificate from Sagar, and had applied for an Indian passport, he added.

Picked by the Pakistani intelligence agency in 1995-96, Imran was trained and sent to Delhi by air in 2003. He got married to a woman from Kolkata, and had been staying at different places, including Srinagar, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata, the official said, adding teams had been sent to different cities to collect further details.

To a query, he said Imran's wife was being interrogated to confirm whether she was aware of his activities.

Well this is nothing new. Both countries have active spies in the other country. So to single out the ISI for everything is not fair. India also has RAW agents in Pakistan, this is all a part of life and politics.

So how was he sending information through phone? was he that stupid to actually use phone to transfer his information

Do you think all telephone lines to pakistan are tapped?
If someone get a sim card and calls to some non-military mobile in pakistan, and transfers message in codes, to you think its easy to detect?

Even Genaral Musharaf spoke to his commanders via phone During the kargil war. Do you think he was a fool. There are satellite phones with secret frequencies which are used for transferring sensitive information.

If you want to he 100 percent secure, using pegions is the only option.

Yes, its not uncommon, but if the Agent is not trained properly to psychologically tackle interrogation, he could prove deadly for his mother organization by revealing up their plans. If he is trained well he could prove otherwise.

One of the failures of ISI:

The PAF Field Intelligence Unit at their base in Karachi in July 1980 captured an Indian agent. He was interrogated and revealed that a large network of Indian spies were functioning in Karachi. The agent claimed that these spies, in addition to espionage, had also assassinated a few armed personnel. He also said the leader of the spy ring was being headed by the food and beverages manager at the Intercontinental Hotel in Karachi and a number of serving Air Force officers and ratings were on his payroll. The ISI decided to survey the manager to see who he was in contact with, but then President of Pakistan Zia-ul Haq superseded and wanted the manager and anyone else involved in the case arrested immediately. It was later proven that the manager was completely innocent.

Now this is one of an example how agents are trained to handle interrogation.

Cheers

I'm sure he's not the only spy on either side of the border. I knew a Sr. Tech. airman who tutored me in middle school. He told me of a story in the 90s about how whenever PAF F-16s would go on training missions near the border without missiles, IAF planes would be hovering closeby on India's side. Whenever they were armed, the IAF planes wouldn't buzz around like bees. Later, it was discovered that a PAF airman was passing on info to the IAF.

I am sure they also found Pakistani passports with them as usual.

thats possibly a new propaganda inorder to pressurize Pakistan....there is still no any strong evidence of this news....both the countries have such type of activities...nothing new in this.

Whoever comes from pakistan to india, is very much under the watchfull eye of indian intelligence agencies. So all of his calls getting tapped is nothing impossible or for that matter detecting them. And as for Musharraf, that was just indian propaganda campaign. India wanted to show pakistan involvement in the conflict by saying that we had tapped Musharraf's voice giving commands.
By the way article doesnt say that a satellite phone was retreived from him. Otherwise it would have been highlighted.
