PARIS – Daily News with wires

Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani, an Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning for adultery, has also been sentenced to 99 lashes for a photo published of her without a headscarf, according to her son, Agence France-Presse reported.

In an interview published on the website of the French magazine La Regle du Jeu and the blog Dentelles et Tchador, the woman's son, Sajjad Mohammadi-Ashtiani, said they learned of the new punishment from released inmates.

A prison judge confirmed that she was to be lashed for spreading "corruption and indecency" by the publication of a photograph of her without a headscarf that appeared in a British newspaper, he said.

The Times of London published on Aug. 28 a photo of a woman without a headscarf it said was Mohammadi-Ashtiani; on Sept. 3, however, it said the attribution of the photo, which it received from one of her lawyers that has fled Iran, was incorrect.

The photo "is certainly not that of my mother," said Sajjad Mohammadi-Ashtiani.

Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani, a 43-year-old mother of two, was given the death penalty for an extramarital relationship. Iran has subsequently said she was also convicted of being an accomplice in her husband's death although she has denied the charge.

Her plight has prompted protests in Europe and an international campaign to spare her, causing Tehran to provisionally suspend the death sentence.

After an international outcry, Iranian officials temporarily halted the woman's stoning sentence in July, BBC News website reported on Sunday. Nonetheless, there are fears the death sentence could be carried out by hanging.

In May 2006, a criminal court in East Azerbaijan province found Ashtiani guilty of having had an "illicit relationship" with two men following the death of her husband. She was given 99 lashes.

In September 2006, however, during the trial of a man accused of murdering her husband, another court reopened an adultery case based on events that allegedly took place before her husband died.

Despite retracting a confession she said she had been forced to make under duress, Ashtiani was convicted of "adultery while being married" and sentenced to death by stoning.

The Vatican, meanwhile, said Sunday it was in touch with Tehran "through diplomatic channels" over the controversy surrounding Ashtiani sentenced to death by stoning for adultery. The statement reiterated the Catholic Church's opposition to the death penalty.

"The Holy See is following this affair with attention and commitment," Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said in a statement issued in answer to journalists' questions on the matter.

not crazy its the law if she was so much in love with another guy she would have divorced her husband and married him instead of adultery. this is the way the Shariat works. Anything that has been said by Prophet PBUH and laws laid down by Almighty Allah are undebatable. It is a test case of shariat in this moderate ***** world of today. If under International pressure death penalty is not imposed she should be sent to prison for life until she die in prison.

More like medival law..if a muslims woman published a photo without scarf..that would be an affair between her and her photo..why is moral police wanting to spank everyone into mono dicipline?? The Saudisn are moving towards moderation and Iran is moving toward extremism..good move for the mullahs of Iran..bad for Iranian nations.

Yeah they are see. If anything put forth is Illogical. Like what is going on in Iran it is very debatable. Infact it is so debatable i posted the article here and got two varying opinions.

Why is that only women are getting lashes and stones in Iran...Where are men hiding ? If there is a law then it should imply equally on both parties. Are the men getting away with it or it’s just that no one cares to mention about them?

If they want to apply Hadood laws, then for Adultey , only eye-witness testimony and confession are admitted ...and for eye-witness testimony, the number of witnesses required is four. Now these four witnesses must have seen the penetration happening.... I know it sounds absurd but it’s actually the absurdness itself that protects people from unnecessarily getting death by stoning.

Its all becoming a big joke in Iran now... Its 21st century , they shall seriously reconsider their position that what kind of an image they are giving to rest of the world. If they want to be tough guys, so be it : But then they should remember that they will be all alone in this one. Even the rest of Muslim world is getting sick of such incidents.

How advanced huh, What can you expect from these Ayatollahs, They are the people who decreed that virgin female prisoners must be raped before Execution, Simply disgusting

it was actually a Fatwa according to a fatwa issued by Khomeini: all virgin girls facing the death penalty, irrespective of their age should be raped systematically by their killers so that to prevent them from entering the Heaven.

I am assuming you meant their would-be-executioners by killers.

I have learned not to believe anything on on Fox news, third link is Israeli news so am guessing they might be biased, not too sure about the first link.

Problem is, this claim seems so outrageous it is hard to believe.

Only virgin girls are allowed in Heaven according to Islam?
