Interesting that they had to make a standard radio warning to an ally at the time. But doesn't the aircraft have to have fire control radar to know who its targeting before releasing the missile?

It depends. If you have a datalink, you can have a ground station, ship, or other aircraft send general target info to the plane, which then programs the missile to fly a certain path (using waypoints) to the area where a target is expected, where the missile itself uses active radar and perhaps a search pattern to actually acquire the target. Targeting data can be radar, ESM, AWACS, visual etc.

Did you know about the new cruise missile Iran just showed off? It was originally meant for air to surface. They modified it for surface to surface? Did you know? So in reality we had no idea.
Yes, that Kh 55 clone, acquired via shady Ukrainian and Russian contacts. They didn't really have to change the missile, they just stuck a booster onto it and a developed a launch vehicle.

The Novator RK-55 Granat (Russian: РК-55 Гранат 'Garnet'; NATO:SSC-X-4 'Slingshot'; GRAU:3K10) was a Soviet land-based cruise missile with a nuclear warhead.
The RK-55 is very similar to the air-launched Kh-55 (AS-15 'Kent') but the Kh-55 has a drop-down turbofan engine.
In 1971 Raduga began working on the air-launched Kh-55, which first flew in 1976. That same year, RK-55 first flew. NPO Novator would work on the submarine- and ground-launched versions.
In 1993 Novator exhibited the 3M14/3M54 Klub (SS-N-27 'Sizzler'), which appears to be based on the RK-55

The original Kh-55 had a drop-down engine; the Kh-65SE had a fixed external turbojet engine, whilst the Kh-SD had its engine inside the body of the missile.

What is the general naval situation like in the Caspian Sea? Im guessing Russia has the largest fleet but what are the sizes of the Azerbaijani, Turkmen and Kazakh fleets? Just curious to know how this new frigate fits into the general picture. Congrats btw.

Iran has the 2nd most powerful navy in the Caspian , next is Azerbaijan. Turkmenistan only has 2 vessels that actually can pose any threat to anyone , each carry about 16 anti-ship missiles and rest is patrol boats.

Azerbaijan is currently in pretty big build up in the caspian , it proposed deals to South Korea worth $3 billion for frigates , submarines, supply ships and etc. negotiations with Turkey over Milgem corvette.
Azerbaijan recently built new shipyard , which currently is the biggest in Caspain , and border guards (coast guard) have their own shipyard , which builds Israeli vessels. Coast Guard alone is getting 12 new vessels with possibility of additional
Saar 72 vessels.

in addition we already ordered Bal-E battery (64 anti-ship missiles)

Well since we are not at war with Iran and you didn't attack the carrier right there, you can claim all you want about recording footage of the carrier crossing through. Its not really that hard when the carrier is just a few miles from shore. We can easily find your boats.

How many of them at a time? Only one? Or can the system handle salvos of 3, 6 or even more coming at it at the same time or only seconds apart? Each Khalije Fars launcher carries three such missiles exactly because of the same reason.

each Burke class destroyer has 90 cells , usually during peace time 1/3 of it is dedicated for missile defense carrying SM-2 or SM-3.
each Ticonderoga class cruiser has 122 cells again with 1/3 of it dedicated for missile defense

considering a carrier battle group will use at least one cruiser and two destroyers they will have no problem defending.
you gonna need to launch around 100 or even more to completely overwhelm the system and hope that a few slip by.

That's considering the kill probability of the missile defense system is 100%. I was not able to find any numbers but it is not 100% for any missile. And I'm sure it is even lower for a ballistic missile that is approaching at Mach 6 or above. So for each incoming missile they need to at least fire 2 in order to make sure it is hit.

The other thing is those missiles are designed to counter cruise missile not ballistic missiles. the fact is nobody knows how well they would perform against ballistic missiles.For example, RIM-7 has a range of 19km. Let's say it can engage targets at the same height (which I highly doubt). Khalije fars approaches its target at Mach 6 if not more. That's 2 km/second. Meaning the projectile will pass the last 19 km in less than 10 seconds. So no matter how many missiles the naval unit carries, it has only 10 seconds to fire enough missiles to counter each missile. Now consider 3 coming at the ship. It needs to fire 6 missiles (2 at each incoming) in 10 seconds. 3 complete salvos of Khalije fars missiles (9 total) and the targeted ship needs to fire 18 of its missile to hopefully remain in one piece. They may work for limited number of cruise missiles but not the ballistic ones.

They are all the same. Difference is the number of stages and the warhead.

SM-2 and RIM 7 are more likely options to counter Khalije Fars missile. RM-3 range is to long for it.

what is it's guidance? think I read it has electro-optical??? think a soft kill with smoke would make it harder to hit. or a lazer to blind the electro-optical sensor??

So modifying by having a booster and having a platform for this weapon for surface to surface pretty much made the difference. No different than adding ground attack capability for the F-14 with not much difficulty.

By the way, do you believe it was Iraq's intention to hit the American warship? Or was it an accident as they said?
