What's new

Iranian Jet Engine Design and Manufacturing Company is Established

I figure maintenance / parts production could be performed locally. Full production seems unlikely.

You are correct, as I write this comment Iran has not put this engine into full production, however there is an ongoing project to make an Iranian version of this engine. Perhaps they have made a few and they're undergoing tests and will be under such tests for years to come, just like Iran did with the OWJ engine.

I see no obstacle facing Iran in this project. Just a matter of time before it is done and then hopefully we will see military versions of it just like Chinese did with their WS-10.

Which parts seems unlikely?
Whether its worthwhile doing in the first place.

Both deals with Boeing and Airbus for 109 and 118 airliners respectively are not likely to go through. The US House of Representatives voted last night with a new law that prohibits the sale and financing of these aircraft for Iran air. This clearly applies to Boeing. But likely also to Airbus, as the law applies to aircraft of which more than 10% is made in US.

That means only relatively few A320s to service (about 40). Why bother than to domestically produce this particular engine? Esp the 5A (737s for example use CFM56-3B-1, CFM56-3B-2, CFM56-3B-1)

Iran needs to produce this engine for its own civil air-plane project and also to make a military version out of it like the Chinese did with the WS-10.

WS-10 may have been based on the core of the CFM-56II (itself based on the General Electric F101); China purchased two CFM-56IIs in the 1980s. China may have spent nearly 20 years developing source code, after being unable to purchase code from Salyut.

Why not work with the Chinese then.

Note: both WS-10 and F101 are fighter jet engines.

There are several versions of CFM-56. We were discussing specifically CFM56-5A, which is used on A319 and A320, and differs from its Boeing-fitted cousins by featuring a FADEC and incorporating further aerodynamic design improvements such as an updated fan, low-pressure compressor, high-pressure compressor and combustor.

CFM56-5B series
An improvement of the CFM56-5A series, it was originally designed to power the A321. With a thrust range between 22,000 and 33,000 lbf (98 kN and 147 kN) it can power every model in the A320 family (A318/A319/A320/A321) and has superseded the CFM56-5A series.

Why not the B series?

NOT sure if it's this, but just seeing pic below reminded me of pic above.

A view of the lower section of the JT8D-219 showing the installed Constant Speed Drive or as otherwise known the (CSD). The CSD maintains constant speed to the engine driven electrical generators which provide electrical power to the aircraft while in flight

For reference, Pratt and Whitney JT8D-209/217 jet engine on AM-1361 Air/Truck Shipping Stand designed for transport (on air ride truck and trailer ) of the engine.

Mmm, maybe the CSD is too small a component by comparison (compared trailor sie and wheels).
