ERBIL, Kurdistan Region—Iran’s foreign ministry has scolded Saudi Arabian foreign minister for his recent inflammatory comments on Iran, describing the Arab kingdom as the father of al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (ISIS).
Bahram Qasemi, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman told his country’s media that he suggested the Saudi foreign minister “avoid such comments and think more about the consequences of what he says,”
The Iranian statement comes in response to an interview of Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir with Euro News in which he said, “35 years of Iranian aggression against Saudi Arabia and its allies is enough and we cannot tolerate that anymore,”
Al-Jubeir said in the interview that Iran continued its hostile activities in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq and sending arms to the Houthi rebels of Yemen.
In response, the Iranian foreign ministry spokesman said, “Every time al-Jubeir gets a headache he says some funny things about Iran,”
Qasemi retorted that Riyadh was the sponsor of terrorism in the Middle East and called the kingdom the father of the al-Qaeda and ISIS.
Saudi Arabian officials have angered Iran with similar comments and accusations, most recently by a call for the downfall of the regime in Tehran by Prince Turki al-Faisal at a Mojahedin-E-Khalq summit in Paris.
Relations between Tehran and Riyadh hit an all time low earlier this year when the gulf kingdom executed prominent Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr and after the death of several hundred Iranian pilgrims at a Haj stampede last year whose bodies still remain missing.
