iPhone 15 gets big discounts in China to boost sales

BY RAJESH PANDEY • 11:34 PM, OCTOBER 23, 2023

Apple’s latest iPhones are available with deep discounts of up to $200 in China. Many analysts believe Apple’s iPhone 15 series has been doing poorly in China.

The slowdown in sales has caused online Chinese e-commerce companies to offer hefty discounts on the new iPhones.

Chinese e-retailers are offering hefty discounts on iPhone 15

Reuters reports that JD.com, Taobao, and other e-commerce sites are offering the iPhone 15 with up to 1,501 yuan ($205) discounts. With China’s economy experiencing a slowdown, the e-retailers hope such discounts can help spur demand for the new iPhones.

Thanks to the discount, Chinese customers can get the iPhone 15 with 512GB storage for 7,498 yuan ($1026), down from its official MRP of 8,999 yuan ($1,230). Similarly, the 128GB iPhone 15 Plus is available for 6,098 yuan ($834), 900 yuan ($137) cheaper than its MSRP.

As for the Pro models, the iPhone 15 Pro Max with 512GB storage is on sale on Taobao for 10,698 yuan ($1,464), while it is listed for 11,999 yuan ($1,642) on Apple’s website.

A report from earlier this month claimed that iPhone 15 sales are down 4.5% YoY in China compared to iPhone 14. Interestingly, Huawei’s comeback with the Mate 60 series also appears to have dented the iPhone 15’s demand.

Apple is seeing strong demand for iPhone 15 Pro worldwide

It is not uncommon for Chinese retailers to provide discounts on iPhones to spur sales. However, these offers usually arrive around significant shopping events, like Singles’ Day or Chinese New Year. This time, they have cut prices early to boost the low demand for the new iPhones.

Interestingly, Apple is seeing strong demand for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max outside China. This is despite the Pro Max variant having a higher base price of $1,199, as Apple has done away with the entry-level 128GB configuration.
