Both countries are pursuing power and superiority over the other, but imagine what would happen if we united? We would be one of the largest and most powerful miltary forces in the world. What do you think?

Jinnah was the first one who suggested a common defence, but arrogant Nehru laughed and said "but against whom Jinnah talks of common defence?" later Ayub also suggested and by that time Nehru was also a bit interested, but somehow, it didnot went through...

USA Canada type relation was also a suggestion by Jinnah...

as for today, a month back a conference was held in Islamabad that peace through military arrangements between India and Pakistan, this is totally a different way of looking at things, though its also constructive.

P.S. post 15 for more accurate view about Ayub and Nehru era.

Common defence does not work .If what is written above is correct Nehru did the right thing by turning it down.

US - Canada arrangement for India & Pak ?

Who would play US & who would play Canada ?

See.. problem starts .

No Janjha Chulha.

It would be good for the region as such but if you are talking specifically about Military might then it will fade away....Without a threat in the name of IA, PA will hardly have any motivation to keep sharpening their defenses the way they are doing right now...Same would be true for IA, though PLA might still give us a reason...However once India and Pak shake hands, China will surely join...

Pakistan shud be like Canada

An Indo-Pak military friendship would destroy the arms race, making both countries weaker (military at least).

if you knew US-Canada model... secondly its never to replicate, it cannot be... common sense !!

common defence is you watch my back and I watch yours... like against external threats, lets say if World Super power wants to make a base on indian sea port, it seduces India through lucrative offers, if there is no arrangement between India and Pakistan, india would be tempted to benefits, compromising the long term benefit of the region (narrow thinking) similarly world super power seduces Pakistan through lucrative offers, if there is no arrangement or working relation between India and Pakistan, Pakistan would be tempted to benefits, compromising the long term benefit of the region (narrow thinking)...

had Pakistan and India been on the right track, the history would not have taken the course it took... right decision leads to right path, wrong decision led to wrong path...

but nonetheless, neighbours should live like neighbours, only our enemies benefit from our disputes !!

well as far as there are issues like Kashmir out standing this sort of thinking cannot work...

Up till 1954 this was seen as a very probable situation, when in response to the No-War Pact initiated by Nehru, Pakistan extended a "Combined Defence Pact" whereby Pakistan and India would work as a Union with certain subjects held by the centre, this included foreign policy and defence among others. However, this pact was made conditional like the latter with the solution of the Kashmir issue. Resultantly, neither pacts materialized. It was possible for that generation when the people had memory of the other country and WANTED a union, now however, the new generation has no loyalty or memory associated with the other country thus there is no quest for the formation of a 'Central Union'.
