India's GPS Freebie for Neighbours Soon as GPS-Aided Geo-Augmented Navigation System (GAGAN) Ready

Interesting Points:

- There are also plans to provide global navigation services by clubbing Gagan’s capabilities with that of the US Global Positioning System (GPS), Russian GLONASS, European Galileo, Chinese Compass, Japanese Quasi Zenith Satellite System.

- “As part of our long-standing involvement in the US-India Aviation Cooperation Program (ACP), we are currently identifying new ways to collaborate with our Indian and US government partners in innovative ways to further support India in expanding its Gagan system, extending its coverage over greater areas, possibly in the neighboring region,” said Nikhil Khanna, country director and senior executive – India for electronics major Raytheon.

- “Gagan’s job is to provide GPS-based location of the aircraft to pilots, thereby saving fuel. The system can also provide real-time satellite-based location to ground handlers,” the CNS official said.

- “This can be beneficial in averting such incidents (like MH 370) in the future,” the official added.

There's no need for India to take the bread away from its children, among the most stunted in the world, to offer GPS service that already exists from multiple much richer countries of the world.

India is condemning another generation to brain damage, poor education and early death by failing to meet its targets for tackling the malnutrition that affects almost half of its children, a study backed by the British Government concluded.

When the established US GPS is available worldwide, what advantage would gagan give to indias neighbours? Is the gagan system more advances or cheaper?

What the fcuk? Citing a six year old report with Global Hunger Index 2009 and early 2000's years as a benchmark! Wake up it's already 2015 - The latest Global Hunger Index 2014 is out - Now India ranks ahead of Pakistan in child nutrition -

trip2-png.152542

>> The number of hungry people in India has fallen to by 9.5 per cent in two decades from 1994 to 2014, but in neigbouring Pakistan the number has risen by over 38 per cent in the same period.

>> India has improved it's score from 30.30 in GHI 1990 to 17.80 in GHI 2014 - with this India now ranks 55th out of 76 countries - ahead of Bangladesh and Pakistan, but behind Nepal and Sri Lanka. Subsequently India has been removed from the list of countries with extremely alarming (GHI ≥ 30), or alarming (GHI between 20.0 and 29.9) hunger situation of the Global Hunger Index (GHI).

>> India's percentage of children whose growth is stunted due to undernourishment showed a 9.1 percentage point decline between 2005-06 and 2013-14, the period when the Manmohan Singh-led government was in power, a new World Bank report on nutrition in India says.

>>In this period, the average annual rate of reduction in children with stunted growth was 2.6 per cent, below the national target of 3.7 per cent but much higher than the 1.7 per cent of earlier surveys.

>>The findings show the percentage of infants exclusively breastfed had risen in this period from 46.4 per cent to 71.6 per cent. Both parameters are considered key indicators on child malnutrition and health.

>>The rise in exclusive breastfeeding rates from 46.4 per cent to 71.6 per cent in eight years represents an average annual rate of increase of 5.5 per cent, far above the rate required to meet India's World Health Assembly (WHA) target by 2025 (1.5 per cent). In fact, if the preliminary numbers hold, India will have by by 2025 far surpassed its WHA exclusive breastfeeding target of 57 per cent.

>>The percentage of children under five years who are wasting away dipped from 2005-06 to 2013-14 from 20 to 15 per cent, the report said.

All he is good at is manipulating facts and figures - this time he quoted a 6 year old report based on figures of late 1990's and early 2000's as benchmarks! Never believe in what he writes in his blogs - verify each and every bit that old man claims! :coffee:

When the established US GPS is available worldwide, what advantage would gagan give to indias neighbours? Is the gagan system more advances or cheaper?

GAGAN is an improvement over GPS - it is more accurate and reliable that the general GPS - GAGAN is an augmentation of the GPS - a method of improving the GPS's attributes, such as accuracy, reliability, and availability, through the integration of external information into the calculation process. Raytheon dubs it as the "World’s most advanced air navigation system". Fore more details refer post #8 and #10.

Do the neighbouring countries really want this and will they appreciate it?

Pakistanis like @RiazHaq may say why is India spending so much on satellites when they dont have toilets

Bangladeshis like @idune will like this to be a rawamy conspiracy to control and monitor bangladeshi traffic

SriLankans like @manlion will say this is a plot to stiffle the tamils

They will anyway not be able to afford it. GAGAN is used using a modular receiver in the operating aircraft, which is a cost for their carriers.

Barring Sri Lanka, Nepal & Bhutan, I don't think anyone will use them.

So our gagam is like a lens which amplify and improve gps useablity

Whats the impacts on my phone gps

Veitnam & BD are possible candidates

Yeah they can too. In fact, entire Southeast Asia can provided they are interested. But I don't think that it would be much help to them unless they fly over India.
