seems like both as it generates 500 mwatt

Sodium cooled fast reactors have several inherent and engineered safety features.
Further for PFBR, robust safety features have been incorporated and qualified based on
extensive theoretical and experimental testing and evaluations, which have been
reviewed elaborately through multi-tier review process under Atomic Energy Regulatory
Board. With these justifications, it can be stated with high confidence that there is no
concern on core melt down accident and associated mechanical consequences such as
failure of containment system in PFBR.

Good news. On a side note as this plant is coming up in Kalpakkam. Used to wonder - why people in Mumbai and Chennai does not have issues with Nuclear plants near them while people in Kudankulam and Jaitapur have issues.

its a commercial reactor which will serve as a prototype for our future models too.
Indeed it is first- so prototype ...but electricity generated will be distributed commercially ....
Prototype.....does not mean it is experimental yet ....It is technology demonstrator ...yet commercial FBR ...!
The design for 2'nd generation FBR is already underway !!!

its not the first..........we already have a 40 mwatt one
i think design will be the same and we are gonna produce 3-4 such reactors till 2020

....subsequent FBR will be smaller in size ...yet more efficient and way cheaper and quicker to build !!!

in this discipline we furnish second highest number of patents in the world only lead by USA
It will go critical early 2014 ...yes it is almost 96 % ready ....
It missed two deadlines earlier ....right since 2011 ...but anyway it is getting ready for year 2013-2014 finally !!!

The significance of PFBR will be realized by our future generations ...
This is one of the most crucial development for India .....probably bigger than Agni V , K-4 or even GSLV ....
It is at heart of our energy security ....
in another 100 years fossils fuels will face severe depletion....mounting global climate change exigency will make need for Green technology much more evident !
Our vast reserves of thorium can only be a source of our long term Energy security if FBR technology is fully realized !!!
