Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday asked the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to develop a satellite that would exclusively serve member nations of South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation (SAARC). It was not an unexpected move from Modi, as the Indian premier sent across a very strong message by inviting the leaders of SAARC nations to attend his swearing-in ceremony in New Delhi in May that India was eager to bolster ties with her neighbours. On Monday, he once again put a new life into the South Asian bloc by conveying the message that all SAARC nations need to develop, survive and prosper together.

The premier met the Indian space scientists at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota immediately after the successful launch of PSLV-C23 rocket. Congratulating the ISRO scientists on the successful launch of the rocket, he said that neighbouring (and other developing) countries should also enjoy the fruits of India’s space missions. He told the scientists: “You should develop a SAARC satellite. We should dedicate this satellite to our neighbourhood as India’s gift. India is rooted in our age-old ethos of ‘Vasudeva Kutumbakom’ (a Sanskrit phrase that means that the whole world is one single family). Our space science reflects that. We should share the fruit of this with our neighbouring countries.” Soon after the PSLV-C23 – which had injected five foreign satellites into the specified orbits – lifted off and completed all four phases with textbook precision, Modi stressed that India’s success has proved space science is not for the elite only. “Space science ultimately works to change the lives of the poor. Space science empowers a child in the farthest village with education. It delivers tele-medicine. It enables a youth in a small town with various new job opportunities. Satellite technologies have made distance irrelevant. It furthers the power of 12.5 million connected Indians,” said the premier. According to Modi, a country’s economic development depends on the success in space science and India cannot make economic progress without getting help from space scientists. “The Geographic Information Systems has applications in urban planning and watershed development. Space imagery helps in land management and coastal management. It is an invaluable asset in disaster management. By predicting cyclones, it has saved millions of lives,” he added. Modi, meanwhile, requested the Indian space scientists to enlarge the footprints of the country’s satellite-based navigation system to cover the entire South Asian region.
